In practise you will have noticed that increasing the sensitivity increases chatter. This is because increasing the sensitivity is analogous to increasing the DISC threshold, which decreases the ability to discriminate in favour of deeper target detection.
    - I'd like to study the circuit. Which schematic are you referencing, people are posting many, I'm not sure which is accurate for my machine?

(BTW, I have the new Compadre with the 5.75" coil, is that basically the same circuit we are talking about here?)

I just got the Compadre so a bit early to say, but I think I'm disappointed with the depth, from air tests. I'm straining to target a quarter over 4.5 inches at All Metal setting I think. I just feel there must be some way to get more depth, but maybe the small coil is the killer.

    - Crazy thought - I'm considering the concept of a "parasitic" external coil design that fits around the standard coil with the intent of broadening and deepening the magnetic field. Any thoughts on that?

    - I'm very interested in any extra tweak pots that could be easily wired in that could increase the depth or help adjust it to perform better. The sensitivity control sounds good, but would it really help, or is the detector already at the edge of chatter anyway and no more sensitivity possible?

    - Crazy thought - is there any way we could boost the voltage of the transmit coil, such as by simple step-up transformer, to penetrate the ground further?

    - Has anyone tried NiMH 9v rechargeable batteries in the Compadre, do they work OK? Any thoughts about wiring in a connector for a belt-worn battery pack to buy more cost effective batteries?

I was referring to the schematic in post #3 (by Esteban) in this thread. It's probably not the same as the new Compadre, but the underlying concept will be the same.

Personally I think this is a very poor detection depth for this machine. Is this a new detector, or secondhand?

Brand new detector. But I was testing indoors and not too carefully, I think EMI maybe affected it. I'll do some more rigorous tests outdoors.

I tried some hunting (all metal mode) this morning in a playground covered by a few inches of wood chips. It runs very quiet until it hits a target. I feel like maybe it should be running a little hotter. I kind of wish it had a sensitivity control of some kind. But maybe it dynamically adjusts its sensitivity to the soil.

          compadre sensitivity mod.

please can you tell me the values of the pot and the resistor required

          many thanks terry

I used a 10K pot and a 100 Ohm resistor. A member named PEPSO had a nice Before and After color picture w/ schematic. I will scan and post for you w/i the next couple of days. I searched for it on here, but to no avail.

Hey, can anybody help me with the maxboost resistor for my compadre? I have already installed the 10k pot and it works well but there is no boost in depth (just sensitivity adjustment). I Just don't understand where to connect 1k resistor for Maxboost?

P.S. I Have a new revision of compadre pcb (4.1)

you think are there only all idiots in Tesoro company sitting down? if they can they would be made this mod without any doubt.

It would be nifty if someday a schematic could be made for this unit. I have not had the time.

On my unit, it looked like the cable to the TX/RX coils is unshielded, but not sure -- can you confirm that? At least, I don't see a shield wire going to the PCB, but a shield perhaps could be grounded to a lead in the search head.

                  -SB

I can show you how to get the ground balance tone to work.

Do you have compadre with PCB rev 4.1? Cant quiet catch what specific wire you are talking about... It would be nice if you showed it on the pcb.

i guess i'm really dumb ,but every one keeps saying that there is a resister that goes in with the potentiometer is it soldered to the potentiometer or to the board?i can't see it on any of the pics ,on any of the other posts either.ken

Ken, I have not compadre and did not see it in my life. while i uploaded the mod 100s times.

pls share pics of your board.
