Errata List
Technical Errors
- DFX schematic shown on the front cover, but it mentions White's XLT inside.
- Page 38 – Fig. 4-5 – Off-resonance probe has incorrect pin numbers on IC3. These should be VDD=8, VEE=4, INV=3, NINV=2 and OUT=7. The PCB layout is correct.
- Page 100 - First derivative should be dX/dt = Aw cos(wt), and second derivative should be d^2x/dt^2 = -Aw^2 sin(wt).
- Page 110 - The Raptor schematic has the INV and NON-INV inputs for U2c connected correctly, but the pin numbers (8 & 9) are swapped over. The PCB layout is correct.
- Page 110 - C6 should be 470pF, not 47pF. This affects the DISC OFFSET, and increasing the value of C6 provides a wider range of adjustment.
- Page 111 - The Raptor schematic has the INV and NON-INV inputs for U11a connected correctly, but the pin numbers (2 & 3) are swapped over. The PCB layout is correct.
- Page 112/116 - D2 is shown as 1N914 on P112 (there is no D1), but the parts list on P116 shows D1 as 1N4001. Any generic signal diode can be used.
- Page 112 - R41 33ohm should be connected to +5V regulated supply, not to +9V. The PCB layout is correct.
- Page 149, Figure 11.11 - The bottom end of the clamping diodes should be connected to 0V, and not to the negative battery terminal. The way it is drawn at the moment will cause the preamp output to be driven up to the positive supply rail.
- Page 177, Figure 12.21 - PI-1 PCB Layout - the silkscreen is incorrect for Q3.
- Page 230 (Figure 14.9) and page 235 (Figure 14.15) show the reference designators for R19 and R25 swapped over when compared to the PCB. However, this makes no difference since both resistors are 100R.
- Page 237, Parts List - Misc: The battery holder should be a 6x AA type, not an 8x AA type, as the power supply is 9V.
- Appendix A - The coil calculator software (Version 1.0) has been superseded by a later version (2.0) that is obtainable from the sticky post at the top of the Coils Forum (see coil_calculator.js for updated code). A more detailed explanation is given at: http://www.geotech1.com/forums/showt...528#post169528
Note: The pin number errors and other mistakes unfortunately occurred when the original Easy-PC schematics were manually redrawn using Microsoft Visio. The PCB layouts were generated from the Gerber files, and are therefore correct by default.
Typos & Printing Mistakes
- Page viii - Basic Type and the Contents of the Book - para 4 - "The coils are arranged in such a way that there is (not "in") very little mutual inductance ..."
- Page ix - para 3 - Book title given, "The Modern Divining Rod" is different from the title of the book pictured, "Modern Divining Rods".
- Page 9 – para 1 - Treasure Hunting – there should be a comma after “$100”.
- Page 10 – “10's” and “BFO's” should be “10s” and “BFOs”.
- Page 33 – should read: “known as (an) off-resonance,”
- Page 49 – at top - “scope” appears as a word on its own.
- Page 52 – Experiment 5-6 – should read: “with the coils inductively balance(d)”.
- Page 80 – “See Chapter 14” should read “See Chapter 15”.
- Page 88 - para 4 - The word "Nature" should not be capitalized.
- Page 88 - para 4 - The comma before "However" should be a full-stop.
- Page 88 - para 6 - "different response to..." should be "different response than..."
- Page 117 – Point #5 refers to Chapter 14 instead of Chapter 15.
- Page 142 – There are two figures labeled 10-29. The second one should be Fig. 10-30.
- Page 171 - Fig 12-16 - The OLE link in Adobe FrameMaker for PI-5 was broken, resulting in an incorrect (non-working) schematic being inserted.
- Page 224 - TX Circuit - the text states that the coil diameter is 80cm. The actual diameter is 80mm, as shown in the schematic.
- Page 224 - TX Circuit - the text states the number of turns is 75, but the schematic shows 76 turns. The number should be 75. However, in practice you will not notice any difference in operation.
- Page 244 - para 4 - "wavelength" should be plural.
- Page 271 - Appendix B - "Minimalist Inductance-Balance Metal Detector - Elektor Oct 2007", should be "2003".
