I built a Bandido in SMT.

Seems scary. But turned out to be easier and cheaper than a through board build. I used solder paste. Small blob on each pad then the component place with tweezers. The paste acts like a glue to hold it in position. Quick touch of each end with the soldering iron and your done. No snipping leads.

Yes I have similar good experiences with SMD
And I realy love to learn about, how to do different things, while watching youtube videos.
Here are some examples, which I use in the same or similar way.

How to make a double sided pcb at home:

How to make very flat vias:

      How to solder SMD components:

How to desolder SMD components, works realy well with 0,2 mm copper wire:

Yes, it's a breeze. No problem.
Seems like a lot of effort. Why not just by a good metal detector, already assembled? The logic behind assembling such devices one component at a time is no longer making sense in my opinion.
But I am respectful of designers efforts of the pcb, very nice work. Maybe there is a way to use oven reflow for one side at a time. I take it that both sides of board have components?

Yes indeed, oven reflow is the way to go with these boards.
Much like shake and bake chicken.

Well, on the bottom side there are the most SMD parts, so your suggested methode make some sence but you need some special equipment I think,
so that your chicken will not be burned.
Anyway to complete the pcb in the way, like Koala suggested, you will only need solder paste, a tweezers and simple head magnifier. My solder point is with 0,8 mm, not very small.

The goal of any homemade detector, is in my opinion the fun to create your own stuff and of course to safe a lot of money.
With a proofed design of course, it is much more simple.

Also I think, SMT is faster than THT, you not need to turn your pcb so often. You can place all parts with the same value and solding them successively. Check all connections and place all parts with the next value...etc.

Part of the enjoyment is in the build and tuning

Next enjoyment is in finding some that's a couple of thousand years old

But the final smile comes when you realise the artefact was found with a detector you built.

                  hi Fred,
in the case you would offer the boards with pre-programmed pic Controllers i would be interested in one set
but i have no experience in programming such small smd pic Controller

or do you offer a layout for a small Adapter pad from smd socket to through hole pin Header which fits to the pickit programmer?

                      Hello Bernd

Well, I had similar thought about it. Some controller and all other parts, I have already ordered.
But I thought to sell completed and tested boards with display too..maybe.
So I will think about, to sell pcb with soldered and programed controller.
The task of an adapter, I don't understand, because the controller can be easy better programed, soldered in place in the pcb.

                            Hi Bernd
                            Now you can order.
Sorry, but I don't know, how to setup in Ebay, when I want to sell more than just one item.

Some components and displays arrived, time to complete a few boards. But the weather is too nice, to stay at home.
