This isn't necessarily true. It really depends on the definition of "professional", which is often mixed up with "commercial". A geophysicist colleague of mine built ground-coupled and airborne radars because the professional/commercial solutions either didn't exist or were inadequate. Some would definitely call these radars homemade.
