How many holes are you willing to dig per day at 5 feet for nothing?

There are no target identification at 5 feet, so you have to dig on all signal, on crappy target too.

It's been common knowledge to all successful nugget hunters that for finding the greatest amount of gold nuggets you need to use an all metal mode (no discrimination or target ID) and must dig all signals. Sure, you'll dig trash and sometimes lots of it, but it pays off in the long run. A 1 pound gold nugget is 12 troy ounces, so at $1350 per ounce that's $16,200 dollars. You may be able to get twice or three times that price from a collector since large ones are a rarity. I'd dig trash 8 hours a day for 6 months with the chance of that amount as the end result. Mental attitude is very important in finding gold. You can have the best detector made, but if you don't have a positive attitude to go with it you handicap yourself. Remember the kids story of the little train? I think I can! I think I can!

What detector do you use mostly: VLF, PI, both?

I use both. A vlf for the really small stuff and a Pi for bad ground and/or larger deeper nuggets.
At the moment I have a Minelab x-terra 705 with a 6" round DD HF coil.
A White's GMT with both the 6" and 10" elliptical coils. I found my last nugget with this one with the 10" coil.
A White's MXT with both the 6" and 10" elliptical coils.
And a White's Pulse Scan TDI with the stock round 12" dual field and a 10" elliptical Jimmy dual field coil.

I haven't taken the time to do a side by side comparison. They both do ok using the small DD coils.
Where I hunt the ground is very very mineralized, so any vlf is noisy.
If I have time I'll try to compare them better. It's real cold now so it might be a while.

i had a whites spectrum xlt. needed some money had to sell it. big mistake. i miss it .it was a great machine now i dont have anything.never used a pi before

If you are experienced in electronic then build PI (silverdog ofer such kit). Something different hunting philosophy ("dig on all signal") but efective on all terrain and can be cheap.
