  • Stem design

Have been looking into making up stems but need your input on design and lengths / angles
will be using 25 x 25mm square tube easy to mount enclosures etc on
has to break down into max 500mm long for post
straight shaft best, joins will be cut and rivited
armrest's handles possible colour etc etc

Talked to silverdog about selling, I only have basic metalworking equipment so stems will be basic. Friends of mine run an aerial company so they hold stock's of parts required, not in it to make a profit but a good way I can input something into forum.

so please give me some ideas to work with
build what you want not what i think you want
of course i will publish full details on forum of any finished design.

not sure square shafts will be too popular ?

Maximum size for airmail from UK is 600mm, unless rolled and posted in a tube then it can be 900mm - so posting in a tube would be a good idea as your shaft could just be a 2 piece if its a straight shaft, assuming the handle is removeable

what will the bottom section be made from ?

I've seen these suggested as removable handles before

I think round tube is better too, you can bend it easily with plumbing pipe benders and there is more choice in diameters to fit one tube into another.
A three piece stick is good, arm cup and battery holder at the top for balance and the electronics fixed just after the S bend, another tube adjustable in length which goes down to a none metalic section (about 50-60cms) at the bottom, carbon fiber or fiber glass fishing rod tubes are not bad

                    decided on a design

top section 25mm square tube, used square as it is easy to fix to, 50cm long arm rest and handle supplied will need to pop rivit

middle section 7/8" tube push fit in square tube easy to join with a couple of pop rivits 50cm long easily shortened with a saw

bottom section will leave you to supply could be plastic pipe f/glass or even dowel.

handle, round tube can have a switch in top or a flat plate to mount enclosure

now I have the workshop back (been looking after grandchildren) will make up a few samples and send them to silverdog for his thoughts
