Just looking at the low-battery detect cct. U3a pin 1 goes to 9V, but U3 is powered from +/-5V, wouldn't it be best to run the LED off +5V and 0V or -5V?

That's a mistake in the schematic. Have a look at the PCB layout, and you can see that it is actually connected to +5V.
In fact, it cannot be connected to +9V, as the 4066 cannot switch voltages that exceed the amplitude of the power supply.

It's already included in the Errata list ->

The Raptor design is not from Tesoro. It is a completely new design that implements a double-differentiating architecture, which is used by many popular detectors, such as Tesoro, Whites Classic, Fisher, etc. Fundamentally there is nothing really new here, except that the design is fully explained so that anyone with some electronics knowledge can understand how it works. This architecture was chosen for Raptor, simply because it is widely used in the industry. However, not many people really understand how the filters are designed to implement the so-called motion mode of operation, and in particular how discrimination works in an analog detector. Raptor is a learning platform for VLF, in the same way as Hammerhead is for PI.
