When metal detectors first were invented, they were known as BFO's. What in the world is a BFO??? It stands for Beat Freuency Oscillator. Now I am an old detector user, so that is what I used as my first detector. Then the electronics changed, andI was running TR IB units. Hey Melbeta, why are you confusing us
with these letters? Not confusing all of you guys, just confusing some of you guys. THE TR IB stands for Transmittor Receiver Induction Balanced. Not going to
explain this, as I am heading for an other matter.
So now, the industry has moved from BFO's and TR's into VLF's. They came out in 1975, when George Payne came out at Whites Electronics, with his new VERY LOW FREQUENCY detector. It ran 1.782 KHz frequency, which was the lowest frequency ever made. It was sensitive as hell though, in a test looking for Spannish Gold down in the Gulf Coast waters, it was so sensitive that it responded to the "SMELL of RUST"! so Whites, backed that frequency off, in 1976, the 200th Anniversary of America, they had a frequency of 6.592 on their NEW Whites Coinmaster V Supreme! Now I knew Ken White SR, also knew George Payne, and knew Charles Garrett. Also knew Charles brother in law, before he passed away, his name was Ray Price. Ray sold me my first metal detector... After Ray died, Fred Brust bought Ray's NTHL (National Treasure Hunters League) business. Again, not bragging, just telling the truth to tell you my stories...
I am getting to my point. The metal detector business is like the car business, always coming in with new models. Now with the cars today, it appears to me like we are getting our gasoline fuel taking away from us, in the coming future. I do not know about you guys, but I grew up with gas guzzling cars and trucks. These new ELECTRIC cars, have limited miles due to battery charges. Who wants to be out on the highway goind from one city to another city, when the battery runs down and your vehicle coasts to a stop??? Well not me, but I have a directory after directory, full of material. I am going to put in a post of guys, talking about the new GEB machines, which now have DISCRIMINATION in them. Not the older Distrimination thought, but an new one, called PHASE SHIFT DISCRIMINATION...
Do I like that? No, I was raised on the older Discrimination. So I use older machines. I am going to let you read post, and suddenly in it, here comes George Payne into the forum. Now George is a very smart man, and I really like him. I have never met him in person, but I have met him on the phone, and he does not try to pull the wool over my eyes. Some do though. But not George...
So right new, is the postings in a forum, and in comes George Payne, and he tells it clear, and tells it truthfully. He tells the good, the bad, and the beautiful about Phase Shifting. Now no matter if you like it, or love it, or hate it, we need to learn about everything that is going on in the metal detectors. What am I? I am neutral, just stay out of in front of me when I am detecting. I do not like rejecting good targets. I want to dig up all solid targets, no matter if they are good or bad, and decide myself if I keep them, or toss them into the trash barrel. I have an saying, and it is my saying, not so much your saying, but here it is... THE MORE YOU DIG, THE MORE YOU FIND! Now it is true. But our hands, our backs, cannot dig that much. At least I cannot...
So what I do, is unlike the rest of you guys. I metal detect BELOW THE TRASH LEVEL... I am not going to teach it to you, as I need no more competition in front of me out there detecting. What I am going to tell you is when you Discriminate a target, some good targets and some bad targets, ALL COME IN AT THE SAME FREQUENCY, OR AT LEAST AT A FREQUENCY SO CLOSE TOGETHER, that the discrimination rejects both good and bad targets. I search in ALL METAL mode. You do what you want to do and I will do what I want to do. I do not tell others what they should or should not do, and I sure do not want others to tell me what to do or not do too...
First, here is what George says about what he said that day...
