  • George Payne and his relationship with JB-MS.............

Discovery Electroics had a dealer, using the name of JB-MS. Very honest person, just as honest as George Payne. Now I knew George Payne (by telephone, not in person), never knew JB though, He lived in the state of Mississippi, thus the MS designation. JB is deceased now, but I have an directory on him. Why? I like honest people like JB and George Payne you see. So George Payne, during that time period, wrote some material, which I stored in JB-MS's file folder... So I went there, retrieved some of them, and am sticking them in here, under an new posting. Enjoy the files George Payne wrote back then, regarding the Discovery metal detectors. They are relative to Discover machines, but are also relative to VLF metal detectors in general. So here they posted now related to JB-MS... But FIRST of all, JB made many posts, on what he did, some on what he found, so I read them, wrote a booklet about JB, as he went to the old movie theaters like I attended....In other words, we are a bit alike! Time wise, I think JB and myself were close in age you see. You will not only like JB, you will love the story he put into his website. It is gone now, I think he is in HEAVEN myself. I did this story years and years ago, so not sure that the photos of his finds are in the booklet. I hope they are though...... You see, if not, I will be a bit embarrassed!

Now, I said I had George Payne technical stories, and I do. I am not going into the sub-directory in the JB-MS folder, where I have the George Payne Technical Material, and dig it out, and stick it in this posting.... The first story, is on "Fixed Ground Balance circuits vs Adjustable Ground Balance". Which is better? Let George explain each of them below...

I am still moving around, learning and learning and learning. So be patient with my posts. AND, I am running and OLD COMPUTER, as I AM an OLD PERSON!!! Not feeble minded of course, but body and hands are not the ones of a younger person. But here are some more of George Payne's fantastic stories.......Now since I use DIAL UP, on an old 1930s telephone line, I do not have the band width of engineers, nor of any of you who use cell phones. I am driving an old model T vehicle while you guys are running the newest vehicles. Just be glad you get what you are getting while I am yet alive.....And I think two are my limit for Dial UP memory........

Here are some more of old George Payne files. Now he left Discovery, went to to work making and designing metal detectors to use in the LUMBER TREE business. I do not blame him!!!!! I left REAL ESTATE business, went into a ONE MAN MAIL ORDER business. No more struggling with sales people, it was relaxing to just deal with one customer at a time in mail order. Man was it nice. So like I said, "I DO NOT BLAME HIM!!!" Even George Payne's son, went to work where dad was working!!!!!

Whew!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is a bunch of George Payne's technical files... Now the first one below, is JB-MS, writing ONE ABOUT GEORGE PAYNE!!! And some others too of George's... Now I do not have PDF software on this INTERNET COMPUTER, so I can not read these old .PDF files myself, just remember some of them from the past... So enjoy and do not complain, in case I double post a file... OHHH! That second one, George wrote about using MicroProcessor chips. Those are the bit chips, with lots of power, and built in security.... Lets see what George said about them as I forgot a long time ago...

And now, we are getting to the LAST TWO files in this directory. And that is a LOT of George Payne knowledge, on paper. Lets all clap our hands and say "Yea for George Payne" and you sure as hell better clap your hards for MELBETA too, struggling to stick them into Geotech Forum.... It is an job for an old person. How do you like what I am posting so far???????????????????????????????????????? I see a lot reading the posts, but not many saying anything about the posts I am sticking in material. Happy? Not happy??? Sad? Joyful? Mad? Love it? Should I keep on sticking them in for you guys to read and enjoy? Or what?

I spent the morning, trying to get my old 1971 Chevy 4x4 pickup, with stick shift, and an old Fueuer (sp?) heavy steel yellow snow plow blade, heavy metal, like road graders have on the front of the grader, not bendable crap metal you see, ready for the threat of heavy wet snow tonight, into Friday morning.... Sounds a bit threatening for an older person you know... I am at the end of an old dirt road, sitting deep inside an tall Ponderosa Pine tree forest. All we have, wife and myself, are bear, mountain lions, bobcats, foxes, elk, deer, skunks, badgers, raccoons, going to stop now, not lying, chased a bear a few years ago with my riding mower, and he ran like hell!!! Other words I would not be here posting right now, I would have been lunch..............And you want to know what really bad??? I do NOT LIKE the taste of Deer or ELK!!!!!!!!!!!! I like Filet Mignon steak from cattle... So I chase them out of my yard too. They want to eat all of my tall Lilac bushes you see.. And potty all over my lawn... They should do it in the 1868 Ranch right next to my land, not on my front lawn... Okay, got to rest now for the snow!! Bye bye for now!

In the JB folder, there is a folder of mine, labeled "Brochures", went into it, there were 4 of them, 2 were PDF files, and 2 were others. Want to see them? Okay, will stick them right below for you to see and read. All 4 are from Discovery Electronics, the maker George Payne worked for, after he left Compass Electronics, as one of the engineers. He went to help found Discovery Electronics you see...
Do I have factory schematics? Yes I do have some of them. But this post is about the information regarding the various Discovery Electronics unit they made, and the modules for the units!

Hey MELBETA, it says there are MODULES??? Yes, George Payne, the inventor of VLF detection, threw a wild ball at the hitter at home plate. You first buy a BASE UNIT, then you can design your own Discovery Electronics metal detector, to suit your intentions, or your tastes... MELBETA, base unit??? Yep, he was very very smart person. Designed a BASE UNIT METAL DETECTOR. Then you purchased by selection, if you read the first two brochures above, varous base units. Stick them in, what ever you selected and purchased, and you got the and now owned the George Payne "mean machine"!!! Lets start first with the base units... MELBETA has the factory schematic, its rare you see, not sure who or how many have this factory schematic, but MELBETA has at least one of the factory schematics of the base unit. Want to see it? Okay, I assume some of you want to see it. Now its secured, as George Payne invented it you see, so I secured it. I knew George Payne, spoke to him last at Compass Electronics before he left Compass, and joined some of his friends, and opened Discovery Electronics. After that, he left, went to work for a company in the Lumber Business, and I lost contact with George Payne. Do not know where is today you see, but I did hear his son was working with him at that Lumber Company... Now all I got, is this secured schematic of the base unit...
                  MELBETA
But first, I think this is a photo of the rare Discovery base unit:

And now, the rare, Discovery Base Unit, factory schematic, coming to you, from the courtesy of MELBETA and GeoTech Forum (Read, look, but NO Print):

Why not allow printing the schematic?
George works for (or used to work for) Metal Detectors Inc in Eugene, OR. They produce industrial metal detectors. He lives in Salem, I saw him 8 or 9 years ago.

It is very simple Carl. I still am out there, seeking factory schematics, I either print them, and trade them for printed schematics, or if I trade for a secured schematic, I secure my schematics for a secured trade as well. And I also own costly Microsoft software, that I use to ENHANCE OLD blurry schematics, into clear clean schematics! I have printers that print large format sizes, but today, I pay the computer stores for 24x36 sheet prints. Easier for me.

I am very selective on what I do post, but it is almost 100% secured against printing. I have Orcad Capture that I purchased from Orcad, used to write schematics, and own software that I could stick some circuits into PLD chips, but not into that anymore now. Technological changes as you know.

If I permitted everyone to print out what I have collected, I would have nothing to trade. I believe that answers your question above... Some of the schematics I bought from eBay and was the high bidder so I got lots of money buying them. For example, I bought all of the factory schematics from eBay that the Australian Compass Service Center had on Compass machine after Compass machine, and I spend thousands and thousands of dollars on that sale. I can sell copies though on the ones I paid money for though. Other then those, I trade for something. But I am very fair in my trades.

I am not in the business of selling factory schematics however, I am into acquiring them in trades. I collect rare metal detectors you see, and on some of them, I do not have any schematics. So I will trade for what I want if someone out there has a factory schematic I do not have... I also wrote booklets and did put rare schematics into some of my booklets, but they were my own drawings. I used to sell copies, but now I use the older technical booklets more or less to trade for rare factory schematics as well. I can write a booklet based on rare schematics and have something there to trade also...Sometimes they are better then the factory schematics for trades you see... But technology has moved far beyond my comprehension now so I deal more or less in vintage schematics. I used to study patents, and then wrote booklets drawing out my own circuits with the text in the booklets. But with the Phase Shift stuff now, I am not doing that anymore... I trade for newer stuff, but my use? It is vintage machines! Do not like phase shift myself. I like TR units. Souped up TR units.

Yes, I knew the name of the business where George worked or works, did not list it.Last time I spoke with him, he was at another company. Very nice person! I never met him myself, but spoke to him at various companies...The last factory schematics I got of Georges are lumber schematics.Yes, I knew he and his son were working there. A few years ago, Frank told me that George was still there. Not sure now though... I do not know what happened to Frank anymore either. Got his material too...Time marches on each day, and things change all the time you know... Most of all of my friends and my relatives now are all dead. I have a few cousins still alive though. That is it! They come, and they go! Kids out, so checked to see messages. Be back later in the week.

Below, is the booklet I did, on Garrett's BFO-TR Detectors, I got Charles Garrett's permission to re-do his Operating manual, and each photo in it, was an enhanced photo, and I asked him if I could do it, and print out my own copies, and HE said it was okay with him. See how neat and CLEAR the copy of the booklet is????? In 1954, I was working with Bradford Robison Printing and Publishing Company, in downtown Denver, CO., and they made me a PRINTER's Devil, and turned me into what I am today... A MASTER of enhancing vintage photos and vintage material, and I used to make my own MASTER COPIES and had an old engraver, in downtown Colo Springs, make my own negatives, touched them up, exposed them in my exposure unit, can enlarge or make them smaller, burned my own printing plates, and offset printed my own booklets!!!! So when I say I did it, I really did do it......I not only made that cover, I enhanced it, and I made each and every page in that old booklet. The original was an scanner copy, not scanned by a computer, but scanned by an OLD photo copy machine. So you see, it was blurry and crap!! Then I went to work on it, and there it is, my work below! I sold his machines, and I made and printed out my own manuals, and gave them out free of charge! So you see Carl, you got a Printer's Devil LOOSE in your forum!!! Ha ha ha!!! Loose but very able!!! I did an booklet, on Ken White SR, with his Whites Electronics company, and that photo below, was Ken White SR, inside an enhanced shot, with him grinning and smiling at his BFO and TR units, and I was writing about the differences in the BFO to TR meters, right below the enhanced screen shot, of KEN's LAB door, right behind KEN... See the detectors, lined up, with DUAL METERS, one meter worked on the BFO circuits, the other meter worked with the TR meter, and BOTH circuits, ,metal/minerals too on the meters, were in that early Whites metal detector unit!!! Does MELBETA know what he is doing??? HE sure does............ And notice the type, lined up, on the right side, each lined up and line by line, running down the sheet! I used to originally run a IBM Vari-typewriter too in the past! Now that was my very first booklet! Varityped! Still got that typrwriter stored in my basement! Do not use it anymore, but use computers instead!!!!!!!!!!!! Now look at the Garrett booklet COVER, clear as it should have been originally! But it was a crap original. Now the booklet on Whites, see KEN clear??? See his white teeth, and notice HIS SMILE! See what I mean??? Went back in, corrected the spelling errors, and added some words, and now you got it! Now the curve in Ken's photo? Took if from a distance! Too show you how clear his photo was!!!

I did a booklet, on Compass Electronics "Secrets", that the circuits had in the units, and that the detectors actually had. Yes, I loved Compass units, and I used the heck out of them. Now secrets, were some I did not know about, that one of the Compass "persons" told, in postings, etc. So you see, I got lots and lots of factory schematics, and lots and lots of booklets that I did over the years. Collectables? You bet they are! I was told I was a collectable and some wanted to collect me too... But I was too slippery and fast you see...

Here is another one of the rare but collectable booklets I wrote over the years. The COVER??? Well I made a master cover, then used the Compass green for the type, and just typed in for each Compass booklet. So they were different, but STILL kind of the same!!! Now I asked Ron Mack, one of the three owners of Compass, and he told me I could make Compass booklets, so I did. I knew him personally, he took me out to lunch one time when he flew here to see me! Nice guy he was, died from cancer. He offered me that day, a Compass Distributorship, but put a condition, I had to quit runnning real estate. I had two offices, 72 sales people working for me. So I told him NO! I would have run it by hiring people. I knew how to run a business you see. When I went into mail order business, I was sour on what the federal government was doing with the federal loans you see. So I told my people, sending in your license, closing the office, will sell you a desk if you want, not going to sell the business, no one gets what I created you see! Selfish? You bet I was!!! I spent years building it, and sell it to some dumb bunny? Nah!!! Sold the equipment, desks, lease was expired anyway, closed it up and bought a warehouse. Opened my mail order business! Impulsive? Nope! I plan it all out, then do it myself. See the clarity? See the logo PHIL? I did that booklet before you opened up the Compass forum... Compass was still in business and went out of business later on! Ron Mack was still alive when I did this booklet, wrote it, printed it later on. Compass logo was two colors of green, so I took my color selector, copied the lighter green, poured it into the type of the cover, and the cover ended up with TWO shades of Compass GREEN Color! Master? Yes I am. I tell the truth you see guys... Border artwork? Never designed it, just took it from commercial artwork that I own. Hell, I was an PRINTER's Devil you see!!!!!!!!!!!! I have computers CD disks, or printers artwork that I own and can use for any booklet I want to make and print out... I did a cover for the Compass X80 machine, covered the technical information of the Challengers units. Below is the photo of that booklet. Did one on the x70 and x80 too. Why two machines? Well, they were both different operating machines you see. One did this, the other one did that! So compared both in one book too! Did one just on the only the X70 machine too! Did one on the x90, one on the X100, and one on the X200 metal detectors....... Not going to post the other covers, you will have to just take my word on it... Oh, I made an MASTER Compass Cover copy too. Just selected the Master, they typed in the words for the machines, and viola, a cover right for each metal detector machine and each different model. Smart? Well, I am not going to brag, but YES, I am very good at what I do! Kay Modgingly, she loved Compass machines, so I took her photos, material, and did an booklet on Kay too. She is in Heaven too I think. Well, got to go, other things to do now... MELBETA

                            Public Notice:
Just found out, the editing of my subforum is WITHIN THE FIRST 30 DAYS, after the first 30 days, it is Posted PERMANENTLY, in other words, I will not be able to edit nor delete some of my postings, after the first 30 days expires, so am contemplating whether or not I continue posting factory schematics and factory material. You see, I do enhance and clean up the schematics and material, BEFORE I POST THEM!!!!

So I DO a LOT OF WORK on each schematic, on each photo, and on each booklet or publication, BEFORE I post it!!!! And some of them, never traded for them, bought them on eBAY!!! So it cost me money! And I cannot edit them, nor delete them. Bugs the heck out of me you see... Now most of the ones that cost me a lot of money, never posted them YET in this forum!!!! But I was thinking of it....... Won't NOW though...

You see, I trade with engineers, and it is my business, and if I cannot control what I post, it will affect what I do in this subforum. I wanted to have the right to edit "at will", and to delete if I want to delete, and now I find, it is nailed into the first 30 days. So I might not be posting factory schematics here later on. I do not want to GIVE UP CONTROL of my postings to the forum you see... I like to, and prefer to, EDIT at will, and DELETE at will, now I find that is NOT POSSIBLE for me NOW in this forum!!!!!!!!!!!

I am doing some serious thinking on this 30 day matter now you see... Right now, it is "highly unlikely" I will continue posting each week factory material and/or some of my own written technical material, IN THIS SUB-FORUM, you see...

I do intend to stay to read what others post, and I might post my own opinions though, but again, it is a POLICY here, and I just might not be posting in ths MELBETA SUB-FORUM any factory schematics and/or other material I have written. It is slowing down on the snow now, and I own a large acreage, and it needs my attention now, so I am going to be working on the acreage and doing some serious thinking. Just letting you know what is going on with me... So you now see, I may end up being just a reader and a poster, and I may abandon this SUB-FORUM.

I am going to give it a 30 days thinking and consideration over the next 30 days. I will think it over, and make a decision in the next 30 days... Now do not blame the forum, it has been that policy for the last 24 years. I just never knew about the forum's 30 day EDIT and 30 DAY DELETE policy you see!!! So you see, I mightabandon this sub-forumand just post on topics in this forum... but first, going to work on my acreage over the next 30 days or so forth, and do some thinking on whether or not, I continue uploading RARE ENHANCED FACTORY DOCUMENTS into the topics, of this sub-forum. So far, I have NOT SEEN very much POSTING on whether or not you people, like it or not!!! So I will now be gone, for the next 30 days or so forth, and will be back to see what the readers say while I am gone. See you Around May 15th or there abouts now... The snow has melted so far now, so going to take off and work on my acreage now........ Will be back to check and see what is going on in the forum around May 15th though. Going to take a much needed vacation in May too...Will be in NEBR for Memorial Day to see and visit with my relatives there! So see you again in MAY!!!!!!!

Going to stick my business card here now... In case, you got some FACTORY SCHEMATICS and want to trade schematics with me... If you do, EMAIL ME!!!!!!!!
But I get scammers, so put "METAL DETECTOR SCHEMATICS"
in the Heading, or I just might delete the email.......... and NO RESPONSE THEN!!!!!!!!
...And, I could go, get it printed out on large sheet PAPER, and sell it to you, for CASH PAYMENT! Only American shipments though... Do not want to fool with CUSTOMS you see...

                            Now AGAIN,
Now do not blame the forum, it has been that policy for the last 24 years. However, I WAS NOT AWARE of that 30 day policy!!! And that is the STICKER in my BIG TOE!!! So anyone trade factory schematics??? I could be talked into printing them out and trading as well though...All factory ENHANCED for clarity schematics you see...

No traders? I am not into newer machines, am into older ones. I am old school, I bend, but I do not break. I used to do a lot of trading, but not as much as before, because the guys I traded with have died now. But so far, i am still here. No use telling why as Carl will just delete it. I do my own things you see, just like I was taught when I became a Printers Devil way back in 1954.
