  • Petrified Forrests and Petrified Wood..........(Geology)

In 1960 and 1961, I was employed by the U.S. Government, specifically the National Park Service, which was an division under the U.S. Government. Since I was an Historian, and also expert in Geology, I lectured to the visitors on the various geology and history of the two parks I was working in during those two years. They moved me into the trailer house, along with another Ranger, who was Edward Paul Abbey, not only an Park Ranger like myself, but also an writer, of whom Hollywood had noticed. Kirk Douglas, a very popular actor, had bought the movie rights from Ed Abbey, paying Abbey at that time, $12,000 for the rights to make a movie using Abbeys book. So since I was an Ranger, who studied Geology, I used to study the Petrified Forest and Painted Desert, on my two days off from work. I also used to study and visit the various businesses in the adjacent town of Holbrook Arizona. So I wrote an booklet abot the National Park. I took vintage photos, enhanced them to very clear results, and stuck them into the booklet. I think it will be interesting to readers of this forum, as it kind of trains and explains Geological features. Now some of the material I gathered, did not make it into the booklet, as the booklet would end up too large for me to handle. So it is not in the booklet, but I just might stick it into this forum at will in this area. If I stick the individual photos into this area, i will explain the vintage photos. The past to me is very very very interesting you see. It may or may not be interesting to all of you, but reading about the past, is conducive to education along with operating a metal detector out in the world. So I will start out, explaining the geology of the Petrified Forest and Painted Desert. Two areas which are side by side, inside that particular park...

Now there you have it, the Geologic Story of that particular park, going back into time, into that geologic past of the earth. Now to learn about Petrified areas, I took an old map, and enhanced it as well, so one can look at the 1956 map, whick is very very clear now, and it is a rare map copy, I took it from the government archives, and enhanced it for my study of the area of that park. It goes hand in hand with my booklet. Here is the enhanced copy of my 1956 map, which shows the Geologic areas, where they are and were located on the earth. So it is readily available in size, I will stick it in full size, so one will have something the ordinary tourist will not possess... Enjoy the knowledge!

Now on my days off, of which I had two days off each week, I went wandering out into the desert. I found many things. One was Indian RUINS. All that was left from the ancient people, back beyond time, from around the years of 1600 A.D. was the foundation of their houses. They took Petrified Rock, laid it down on the ground, and build houses on top of the rocks. I do not know if the walls and houses were of Petrified Wood, or of wood, or of animal hides. All that was left that I found was the foundation of the houses. Small houses, side by side, I guess for safety reasons. They were very poor people, had nothing but what they hunted. I found fragments of their pottery, very simple the pottery was as well. Now the foundation photo, was too large to post, but I took a photo of their NewsPaper Rock, and from it below, you can see they never went to College. In fact, I do not think they went to any school, and were very primitive people! I do not think they had any business building as well. In fact, I think church mice had more money then these poor Indians from back in the past...! I did manage to post as smaller photo of the house foundations. I think they had not much at all to make walls though... Although a fire could have burned wooden walls, and ashes blown away over time... Who knows? I do not know. All I know is what I saw and found back then... So lets all be thankful with what we do own and what we can eat, and where we do live today...
