Now I wrote my story, sent in to the local newspaper, addressed to the EDITOR, out came a reporter, along with a photographer, and wham, it ended on the front page of the newspaper. Apparently it was loved, as my phone began
ringing like crazy, person after person had their own experience with the POWS as well, so the paper set up and phone and email section for persons to tell their own experience. Here first, is the letter and enhanced photos
I mailed into the local Colo Springs Gazette newspaper, and bam, in days it was on the front page. So why did they use POWs to work on the farms??? Because the guys were all in the military you see. Now I had to select a smaller story, as the front page story was too large to download and send by my old computer.... This smaller POW Camp Story I wrote is smaller, and my older computer did send it!....
you see, Pearl Harbor happened December 7th, 1941, and I was an young kid, did not know what WAR was! I asked the other kids, none of them knew what war was. But the scrap drive, brought things to the front of our old country school, things that the manufactures could use for the war effort! It was a block long, and piled up high, into several rows. Two days later, it was all gone when we came out of the school. Who took it? We had no idea... Farmers, and farms sent all kinds of old horse drawn machinery, and it ended up on the front of our old country school house yard............. That was in Nebr, so I wrote my story, sent it into the local Colo Spgs newspaper, and it was history!!!!! Loved??? Phone rang off the hook you see!!!!!!!!
