I do not think I told this story, of my involvement in the First Operation Moonwatch, so here it is... In October, 1957, Russia sent up the FIRST satellite rocket, and America was flabbergasted with the Russian accomplishment. In
fact, America did know how to do it theirselves........ May I say America was "caught with its pants down on it's legs"??? Now I was attending the Univ of Nebr, working full time all the hours I could work at the Lincoln Army
and Navy Store, which started up buying and selling MILITARY WAR SURPLUS materials, right after WW1 ended. So I began to learn "the running and the sale of military surplus in August 1957. I was very good at it, as I was
fresh to the business, and a born salesman! I outsold the full time salesmen guys! I even outsold the owner Ralph Dworsky! He hired me from August 1957 to January 1958, told me he would lay me off in January. I said "OKAY"! By
January 1958 he told me, "I am laying the others off, but YOU, I am keeping you! You can work your own hours, when ever you can work, the job is yours"!!!!!!!!!
Now back to Oct 1957! There was a part time kid, who was studying Denistery, who was an Astronomer, and was studing Astronomy at the University. I casually told him I built my own Astronomical space telescope back in 1947,
buying the front lens with they called the Objective Lens, and also the other lenses to go in the spotter part of the telescope. My little brother and I, lay out the summer of 1947, in the dark of night, looking at the Moon, and out at the
stars in space. I bought books on Astronomy, and read like crazy, and learned all I could about Astronomy. So he told his instructors about me. I do not know what he said, but I was on the Dean's Honor Roll, they invited me to participate one night, when SPUTNIK 1 was sent up into space by Russia. It was in Oct 1957! No human in it, just a Russian dog. I used to know the dog's name, but forgot it over time. So there I was, in OPERATION MOONWATCH,
with an place on the space tables, had my own Elbow Telescope, it was aimed at the star SIRIUS, I believe if memory serves me, it was nicknamed the Dog Star. It was a double binary star, which means another space object was
so close to Sirius that they called it a double star.
Anyway, the Smithsonian Institute was the governing agency, running Operation Moonwatch! The used a RADIO, with BEEPS each second, and timer switchs at each elbow telescope. So when one saw Sputnik 1, at a
position or place, where he could mark it on his STAR CHART, he recorded his sighting into history. So it went below Sirius, I pushed the button recording my sighting into history! Then I marked it on the Star Chart, signed
my name, the date, the details on my sighting, onto the Star Chart, handed it in, got a coffee and donuts. It was in the wee hours of the morning when it came into view in Lincoln NE!
So to bring you all up to date, the U.S. SPACE AGENCY is located in Colorado Springs. Norad is here, Air Force people from America, Canada, and other countries are here as well. So is the SPACE AGENCY. They have an
Air Force uniform, on one of the shoulders, is the SPACE AGENCY shoulder patch. I was in Walmart, several Air Force ladies were standing near the check out cash registers. So I strolled up to them, said you are "With the Space
Agency???". They said yes. and I mentioned casually I was on Operation Moonwatch in Oct 1957. They went nuts! I had to stand there telling them my story, with them gasping and asking questions. They heard of Operation
Moonwatch, never met anyone that was actually involved with it. So I told them my story. Did the same thing at Burger King, one male Air Force guy with the patch. Told him told, he shook my hand, thanked me, and said he
had heard of it, but had never met anyone involved with it...
Now I did a search on it, it was mentioned out in the internet, one even had a lousy photo of one of the participants using the elbow telescope. So I downloaded it. and saved it somewhere in my disks. If I can find it,
I will stick it here into this posting. Yep! You just met someone who saw the light of the first Soviet Sputnik I and who was involved with the program, and who registered his sighting into the beeping recorder! And I also found Meteorites with some of my metal detectors, and wrote a booklet on the 3 meteorites I found in the past! It is below...
