  • Need help with book recommendation.

    Greetings !

I need a book that explains the fundamental thought process needed to design an electronic circuit at the beginner level in a logical step-by-step order. The author(s) should be well established with good credentials in the field of text books for students. Also, publications should be of recent vintage to insure any current developements and knowledge are included. I am a fan of used paperback books at lower prices. In my view, condition is secondary to content .

I already have the following books listed below and they are great at teaching how components work. However, I still need help with the fundamental thought processes needed for designing any kind of electronic circuit, at the beginner level in a logical step-by-step order.

Getting Started in Electronics , Copyright 1983, 2000, by Forrest M. Mims lll

Make: Electronics , First Edition : December, 2009, by Charles Platt, First Edition : December, 2009, by Charles Platt

What book has helped you the most in the areas I described ?

Thanks in advance for your recommendation !

I see that you live in the USA, have you considered checking out your local school, UNI etc for courses ?

First order of Business is to learn Basic Electronic. The USAF gave me 8 hours a day for Nine months. My Memory Cells just about melted down. I don't remember half of it any more. Do you know the formula for a RC series or Parrelel Circuit? I did . Now I don't. This is why the Creator Made Books and Gave us Google on the Internet.

        Todd,

Here is a set of video coures, which are free. The teacher also sells parts kits for each course at a reasonable price. I recommend you buy the parts kits even if money is tight, this will guarantee you get the same results as the class work. He also has a forum where he will answer questions. I was able to learn how to do basic FPGA/CPLD programming in a few hour using his videos and kit.

Follow up on my thread starter post titled: "Need help with book recommendation."

              Greetings !

In the opening sentence of my thread-starter post #1, I said "I need a book that explains the fundamental thought process needed to design an electronic circuit at the beginner level in a logical step-by-step order."

Well, I found something close to what I was looking for at http:/./www.allaboutcircuits.com/worksheets/diode1.html and have attached the two pages below if anyone is interested. Of course, it's not a book, but these two pages are a good example. You could print and size copies to suit.

              Thanks for dropping in !

I imagine most of your beginner needs can be satisfied with online guides/tutorials.
If you want to get more serious, I suggest investing in a copy of "The Art of Electronics" by Horovitz & Hill. The first edition, though out of date, is still pretty good, and can be obtained cheaply, the Second edition is also rather dated in parts, but sells for a much higher price, usually.

Good news - the third edition of "The Art of Electronics" was published a couple of months ago! Haven't seen it yet but if it's even better than the 2nd then it will be excellent, and worth every penny.

Probably one should read negative comments on Amazon prior to buy. Seems it not suit to everyone.

Good idea to read the Customer Reviews. Most people think this book is indispensable.
