Are you sure about the first five TH Manuals by Karl von Mueller? I've never seen them nor anyone else I know and always figured Karl pulled a funny by starting with No. 6.

Hi, I have seen a photo of the green hardbound THM # 5 by Audobon Press. It sold on ebay about 6 months ago. A close friend has Volume 4 and Volume 5 with white paper covers. I will be able to see them the next time I visit but he is unwilling to send them to me for examination. All six varieties of the first five volumes are listed in Journals of Eldorado with bibliographical data and the first edition of THM 7 and THM 6 repeatedly refer to items formerly published in earlier volumes. Some folks say that the white cover editions were simply inserts in the National Prospectors Gazette and the green cover editions were either reprints or intended for sale to libraries. Don't have any further details at this time. Best Regards, Harley Bissell

Those who know need not be told. But, for the sole benefit of those who don't know, contrary to popular belief by the debunker's, doubter's and naysayer's out there in regards to this long-debated myth, "yes, there were indeed, actual published editions by "Audobon Press", of the late, great granddaddy, Karl von Mueller's "Treasure Hunter's Manual" #1 - #5!"

Can I justify their existence with any physical, genuine bona fide proof? You betcha! But, not with the actual books themselves as evidence. Because, I too, have been in search of them, along with boo coo other very rare treasure-related books, booklets, pamphlets, magazines, newspapers (regular and tabloid-style), maps, etc., for over 35 years!

What I have for proof to substantiate my claim in providing to you their existence as being the actual honest-to-God gospel of reality, are personal letter's from three very honest, sincere and most trustworthy individuals, whose word was their bond, carved in stone. And, that includes a typed-written letter, from the "old man" himself!

When I questioned Karl many years ago in a personal letter to him during our very friendly correspondences with one another over the course of several years, if there actually were "Treasure Hunter's Manual's #1 - #5"?, Karl replied with his absolutely honest, straight-from-the-shoulder stock answer; "You'd better believe it!...I wrote all 5 of them!" But, Karl also confessed in his letter to me, that even he didn't have any of those editions in his own personal library, as a way of providing proof in the pudding. And, he told me candidly, that he wished he did.

I also have among the scads of other letters from nearly all of the "old-time greats" of yesteryear's in my TH'ing files, a hand-written letter from master historian author, Ed Bartholomew, who told me back in the 80's when he was going blind and was selling off his huge personal library of material's, that he had had #3, #4 and #5 of KvonM's "Treasure Hunter's Manual", but had already sold them to another gentleman a few weeks prior to my asking him.

Paul Tainter's letter in my personal files, is another very sincere and most trustworthy gentleman who testified in it to me on these five books authenticity. Even though he didn't own any copies of them himself, either, and he too, wanted to add all of them to his own personal library, he had seen several editions of the "THM #1 - #5" that had been brought into to his shop and shown to him over the course of several years by many old timers who flocked to the "Exanimo Establishment" (later becoming, "Research Unlimited") each year, especially, during the summer months to pay Paul and Joanie a visit and to naturally pick up loads of books, detector's, dredges and other prospecting and treasure hunting equipment and supplies from them in person.

Basically, the very rare editions of Karl von Mueller's classic "Treasure Hunter's Manual #1 - #5" were small-quantity published booklets with thin paper covers, as Harley has already described, which Karl had published by "Audobon Press" when he first got started in the TH'ing writing business and was living in his hometown of Weeping Water, Nebraska. And, nearly everything that was gleaned from all five of those editions, was later reprinted almost verbatim, in "THM's #6 and #7".

I wish you bucket loads of good luck, Harley, my friend, in your extensive search for all of those elusive book titles and other printed TH'ing material which you so eagerly seek! As I too, am in search of nearly all of what you've mentioned on your "Wish List".

          Good Hunting, pal! ;-)

And, by the way, ol' buddy, I would also be most interested in purchasing from you, that "Treasure Hunting Bibliography and Index to Periodical Articles" by John H. Reed, when the dust from that rushing stampede of all of those trader's finally settles.
          ;-)

          Kindest Regards,
          Sincere Best Wishes
          and
          Exanimo!

          ~ Alan ~

Howdy, I am out of the Reed books right now BUT if you will do a search on Treasurenet for John H. Reed you will see a post where he gave his address and the price for the books recently (July or August). Good Luck, Harley Bissell
