  • Square Coil?

I just saw a post on the "coil" forum about making a square coil.

I have seen ads in older magazines for detectors with square coils. I know I have seen at least two different brands. One was either a Jetco or Relco and I do not recall the other. Does anyone have any of these square coil machines? I have been keeping an eye out for one but no luck yet.

The Jetco Mustang came with a square coil for a while. Never seen a Relco with one.

I recently bought what is the earliest example I've seen of detector with a printed circuit coil, and it is square. It's a Radio Shack model, probably from a kit. I'll post pics later.

      Square Coil??

The Roach detector had a square coil. Very rare detector seen one back in the late 70's or early 80's. I think that it was made around 1975 or 76. This was a very early version of a Target I.D.(TR) detector. Never seen one on Ebay, not too many were made. Very expensive for its time. I believe that it sold new for around $400.00 Also the search techique recommended was odd. They wanted one to walk in a straight line with it and not to sweep it at all! Some dealers bought it and basicly got stuck with it........ it just didn't sell! But remember in 1976 no one had Target I.D. except the P.R.G.(Phase Readout Gradiometer.........but that is another Story!!!) Joe

        Square Coil???

Also some of the WW2 and Vietnam era Army Mine Detectors had a Square Coil. I remember reading that the Square Coil was used on the mine detector because of its great ability to detect large objects. I believe that it was called a Bridge design but my memory fades so I will search thru my books and see exactly what it was called!!! Joe
