  • Garrett Gold Hunter

    Hello everyone,

I picked up a old Garrett Gold Hunter at a yard sale. How does this unit rate, and can I get a new/er coil for it, The coil it has is pretty beat up.

Just to let everyone know I love these vintage MDs, and glad there is a forum on them. Brings back memories of being a kid and not being able to afford them. Whats a great old detector? I've been looking for a Compass 77b, but no luck yet. I have a Compass Judge, Fisher Gold Bug and the Garrett, only new one is a Tesoro Vaquero.

    Cheers,

    Kelley

    GARRETT GOLD HUNTER

Kelley, I believe that this used the Groundhog Circuit Board. To be sure contact Garrett! So any Groundhog coil should work. The problem is, if the connector match or not. If not the connector can be changed out. I also believe that Garrett still makes a version of this detector, so new coils should be available! Hope this helps! Joe

...........DIGGER1.....Are you sure that it is a 1964??......How about some Pic's??......Charles Garrett spent 2 years in pre-production....so the first models actually came out in 1966!!....There is a possibility that you could have one of the pre-production models!!....HH.....Joe

I used to be a Garrett dealer, Compass dealer, and dealer of other detectors. This Gold Hunter machine was based upon the GroundHog circuitry, and used its own unique coil.

When I purchased a bunch of older Garrett coils, co-planer and other types, all large coils 10.5" in size and larger, and wondered if I could use those on newer detectors.

So I spoke personally to Charles Garrett on the phone, about those old coils, whether or not they could be used by newer Garrett machines, Charles Garrett sent me a supply of newer coil connectors, and a diagram of how to change the older ones, to the newer detector ones.

But unfortunately, the GroundHog ones cound not be changed over and used on newer normal Garrett machines, they were destined for use only with GroundHog circuits.
