  • Rainbow Metal Detectors

I wonder if any one remembers a company manufacturing the "Rainbow Metal Detector" in Albuq. NM? This company was in business for about 2 to 2 1/2 years. There company claimed that their metal detector design for eliminating mineralized soils that are prevelant in the SW. The detectors (if I remember) looked like Bounty Hunters, I, II and III, (30+ years ago) painted bright gold with a rainbow colored decal. I'm thinking no more than 200 were ever built (or less).

Just wondering if anyone out there remembers these metal detectors?

    Thanks,

    Tony C.

ps -- I might have an old ad about them. I'll see if I can find it and post it.

I cannot definitely say that I have heard of this one. If you have have an ad then please post it. I will have to look thru my old magazines for an ad.

On a side note I have acquired another old Fisher. I now need just two models to complete my pre discriminator collection of Fishers.

At a club picnic a few weekends ago we had a small fun hunt. I tried an old detector in it. Used a Fisher Orion 120. Didn't dig a target. Had my hand on the tuning control non stop. Ran it over a few signals that others had which were silver dimes. Almost no sound. Probably the detector is not working right but I had fun. I will try a different one next time.

      Rainbow metal detector-attachment

I couldn't find an add, but, I found a copy from a telephone book circa 1974. As you can see, I wrote, "In 1972 they were located at 428 Louisana SE and 1976, '77 they were not listed". I remembered something else, the coils were white in nature and open like the Bounty Hunters. Does anyone out there have one in their collection?

        Rainbow Metal Detectors

These were popular from about 1972 to about 1974? or so. They were straight TR's with no discrimination. Since the GEB/VLF detectors were not introduced yet the detectors that advertised some sort of ground elimination did this by using either a gain control or sensitiviity control to reduce the ground effect. Also some of the detectors from this era had their coils wired in such a way to handle the mineralized soil better than others! You are right I don't believe that very many were produced! In over 3 years of scanning Ebay I have only seen one! I actually saw one for real, back at my local metal detector shop back in 1974. It was a trade-in for a new Garrett or Compass(1974), which one I do not remember! 1974 marked the entry of the new discriminators and many company(s) which could not follow the trend got left behind and folded maybe this was the downfall of the Rainbow Metal detectors. I am also a Collector and know many Collectors and this detector is usually missing from most collections...............HAPPY HUNTING AND HAPPY THANKSGIVING....................Joe

          RAINBOW METAL DETECTORS

If you can locate a copy of the "The Treasue Hunter Yearbook" by A.T. Evans it has an article featuring a picture of some of these detectors in the background. Sorry but I don't remember which one, as this yearbook had 3 volumes dated 1970, 1971, and 1972!................HH...........Joe

            Rainbow Metal Detectors

Thanks Joe for the information. I have yet to see any advertisment in any form in Treasure Magazine, Treasure Search Magazine and others.

When I was 15 years old, I went into their store and there was this older gentleman who showed me around. I remember seeing three (3) models available for sale. Boy, was I impressed with the capability of these detectors compared to Whites (at the time) and others, don't remember the prices???

I wonder how many more are sitting in someones closet, attic or ended up in the trash? Somebody out there's gotta put it up for sale by either flea market or Ebay?

Oh Well, the good ole day's

            Thanks again,

They had three models for sale...

They had three models for sale back then, the Mach, the Mach I, and the Mach II.

There was a Mach for sale here in a store June 2011, but no one bought it during the time I was aware it was for sale, maybe it was sold by now, was priced a bit high as I remember.
