The MagPI Probe is based on the MagPI V3 design provided by moodz in the “Moodz' Awesome Gold Pulse Induction Version 3 - MAGPI V3 Project” thread. There are some changes to the original design. These changes are to permit operation with a 2 cell Li-ion batery pack, provide a measure of safety to the damping circuit if TX timing duration is set a little too long, and to accommodate the small size for the PCB (30 mm x 100 mm). The PCB is intended to fit into a section of 1 ½” PVC pipe. The cpu is changed to a PIC18F047Q43/Q84.
The housing will be based on 1 ½” PVC for the main part of the body. A 2 cell 18650 battery pack will be fitted to the aft end of the main body and a ~300uH probe coil wound on a ½” x 4” Type33 round ferrite bar will be fitted to the fore end of the main body. Power will be switched on/off by a twist on battery cap. There will be no display. Alerting is to be provided by a piezo speaker element mounted in the battery cap.
There is a serial connection on the PCB to facilitate setting/changing the initial operating parameters. Once turned on, the Probe will be self adjusting.
The PCB schematic and layout is done with Kicad version 7.0.2. The Kicad 7.0.2 project is provided in the attached .zip file.
