  • MAGPI V2

The MAGPI V3 is a cut down version of the the V2.
Here is the V2 for your enjoyment. It uses synchronous switch mode supplies for lower noise and has more modes than V3. ( like FE reject )

Hallo Mr. Moods, is the V3 PCB compatible?

The V3 is a cutdown version of V2. V3 has less parts so the PCB is different.

Hi Moodz, is the V3 software a cut down V2 also or V2 with some code commented out?

In your opinion is the V3 'the best' of your deliberations with the V2?

Is it worth building either of these or is there something greater on the horizon that we should be saving ourselves for?

Is there a pcb design for the V2 that you would consider sharing?
              Thanks

Its a long story ... the V2 was designed back in 2019 and has more features than the V3 like a switch mode syncronised supply so it only draws half the current of the V3. It also had additional damping modes like regular resistor damping and various other sampling options.
So the short answer is that the V3 is a cut down version of the V2 and uses linear voltage regulators for lower noise.

The current V3 suffers from warble ( damping balance point wobble ) ...
Lack of sensitivity to some degree.
                No ( easy) ground balance.

I have now fixed all of this.

The MAGPI has PI ferrous discrimination in the front end already because the active damping gives you the X and R signals on a plate but would need two channels to effectively use it.

HOWEVER ... by tweaking the component values in the frontend its possible to get fully automated ground balance and good target detection even with one channel and I am in the process of testing this.

SO yes the V3 is worth waiting for and the V2 will probably morph into the V4 ... but not for some time.

                hope this helps.

Thanks for the clarification. I'll happily wait for the latest V3 once you're happy with it.
