Been away from this thread to ages lots gone on I see, from what I have read moodz is taking this from a openly shared project to his own private comercial design ?. Bit of a shame but I guess most good open projects go that way when there is a bob in sight, I hope it all works out it would be awesome to see this as a finished product.
...been slaving over a hot soldering iron all day here LOL ....the first version of the detector is finished and I am conducting field tests ....so far so good .... I have one small problem that is on the verge of being solved .. the current detector auto ground balances however it is very sensitive to magnetic fields ( eg earth field and magnets of course ).. With an 18 inch mono coil the unit picks up a handheld magnet from 12 feet away which is not good unless you want to detect magnets ...however the plus side is that this means my signal processing channels are working well.
Great to hear you are onto the build,looking forward to having a M/L beating machine and a alternative choice for us prospectors....one thing i can relate to is when i made a 1mx1m square coil i could get a beer can at 6'(empty of course!!)

Thanks Ron .. I'm not really trying to compete with anyone but I am aiming for a beer can at 6 feet with a 18 inch coil ... and I reckon I will get there..... I will know in the next few days

I can see the sweat pouring off their brows, lets hope it comes together as predicted and starts us off on a new adventure that opens up the prospecting fields everywhere!!

Hi Midas, good to see the positive results. I've decided my problem it's some sort of strange issue with the analog CRO setup, so I might go and have a look on EBay for a digital replacement.

Just a thought, WHERE are you connecting the 'scope "ground"? I've spent hours hunting a fault only to find I'd got my connection point wrong and so I was upsetting the circuit operation but then sometimes a box of rocks has a higher IQ then me!

Thanks .... the detector is "very" sensitive to moving magnetic fields ... ie if the coil is moving it will detect the EMF ... if the coil is stationary it will detect a moving speaker magnet ( ferrite ... not particulary strong ) at just on 12 feet ... which I was quite impressed with ... because that would be a quite a small signal at the coil.
Even though the detector is responding to mag fields it is relatively easy to pick target responses ... the big plus is auto ground balance ... so what you gain on the swings you lose on the merrygoround LOL ... IMHO ... an earth field problem is much easier to solve than ground balance.

When you have the coil stationary and a moving speaker magnet is sensed when 12 ft from the coil, but when the same magnet is stationary and the coil is moved you find the signal is no different whether the magnet is there or not, it is not that the coil is sensing the moving magnet, it is that the moving magnet is distorting the earth's magnetic field and the coil is within the distortion zone.
Moodz, another test for you....get your coil up in the air with the coil face vertical. Get a piece of 1 inch water pipe 4 ft long and swing it up and down with the pipe parallel to the coil face. Move further and further away while swinging the pipe up and down until the detector is barely responding. The moving pipe is disturbing the earth's field and the detector will sense this. With the pipe stationary at this distance and the coil moving the pipe is too far away to be sensed by the detector.
