    If you are only burning the hex files and want to use the inbuilt UART tool ( serial comms ) to talk to the UNIP chip ( saves wiring up an LCD ) get the pickit software here ....

        Sorry to hijack your thread
        been trying to get the pc to talk to the pickit 3
        with mplab.

        Seems to be a plug and play setup
        plug in the pickit3 to usb port
        start up mplab and select programmer or debugger (pickit3)
        but keep getting this error message

        PICkit 3 detected
        Connecting to PICkit 3...
        PK3Err0038: Failed to initialize PICkit 3.

        Has anybody else got one of these pickit3 clones to work ?
        there does not seem to be any other settings to pick from
        thanks

          Try connecting the PICkit 3 to a board with a chip to be programmed on it.
          OR
          You could try the following procedure ...
          Run MPLAB then hold the button on the unit, and while holding, plug into the USB. This will reload the firmware however I am not sure it will work for clones.

          regards,

          moodz.

            OR try this .... from a Microchip thread...

            1 - Open MPLAB 8.3 or 8.36 - I'm not really sure why, but it is this one that has PK3FW_012505.jam firmware and select PK3 programmer (Programmer -> Select Programmer);
            2 - Connect PICkit3, you'll get the error 38 or so, stating that PIC is not connected;
            3 - Press the button on PK3, until the blue Active light starts blinking;
            4 - Go to Programmer -> Settings -> Configuration and press the Manual Download button;
            5 - Choose PK3FW_012505.jam firmware and press Open;

            moodz.

                I've been looking at that ebay site and the pictures of the PICkit 3 and the PICkit 2 are identical I wonder whether it's a PICkit 2 in disguise. Have you tried MPlab and running it as PICkit 2 ?

                  Mick

                  Also try connecting via a powered USB hub ... not direct to PC ... some PK3s need more juice.

                            My project has ground to a halt, caught between a rock and a hard place
                            I paid for my 4012 chips on the 21 sept and according to tracking number
                            they have not left the usa yet and its now the 13th of Oct
                            Avoid an fleabay seller called audiosector they are very very slow posters.

                              Cancel the Ebay and get your money back.

                              Then get a couple from Element14 they might cost a bit more but post if free and you can bet they will turn up quickly.

                                would you agree these are the right connections ?
