  • Upgrade procedure from v.2

If there an upgrade procedure from v.2 to geotech baracuda that would be great.

  • #2
Yes, I'd like to see this too. I have a built and operating Baracuda, but it would be great to make it even better, per the upgraded design.

All the details can be found here in the Build Document ->
      Geotech Baracuda - REV-A - Project Details

Also, the upgraded version is known as Geotech Baracuda (REV-A) to distinguish it from other [failed] attempts to upgrade the design. Some of these were referred to as V2.0 or similar.

Qiaozhi, I was actually intrigued by your comment in the sticky, "In fact, it is also possible for anyone with a previous Baracuda PCB to carry out cut-and-strap surgery on the board to bring it up to the same standard."

This is what I was referring to. I read through the build doc and probably wouldn't attempt to modify my existing Baracuda PCB without a step-by-step guide for the modifications. After thinking about it, I will probably just build the new Silverdog kit, especially since you have added a ground plane to the PCB.

Great work by the way. Thank you. I thought my Baracuda worked pretty well on the beaches. To have it operate even better would be fantastic.

I do not have a step-by-step guide of how to modify an existing Baracuda design. However, all the details are contained in the Build Document. By reading the contents, and comparing the two schematics, you can easily determine the changes required.

I compared what "I think" is schematic of Barracuda v.2 and Geotech-Barracuda ver A
I haven't actually looked at the built board...

part names from v.2 version schema

            100nF added parallel to C4 and C5
100nF added to VSS <-> GND and VDD <-> GND of U4A
            R39 changed from 2M2 to 39k
100nF added to VDD <-> GND of U1A
            33K at U1E (pin3) changed to 12k
R24 R31 switched from VDD to GND
R31 value possibly changed (needs to be verified)

            Anything else? Anyone?

              Anything else? Anyone?

seems no one cares anymore, ages ago i bought 3 barra kits, i built two one was never any good even with loads of mods and suggested fixes.
the other worked well though only due to being built differently, with the very best components and totally a different power supply scheme based on buck converters.
the third kit was never built, and i was looking for an idiots guide to converting the ver2 to geotech rev1, as i was going to gift the last kit to my nephew along with a fluke lcr meter and my old scope, he is very competent for a youngster with no proper training, but since he is not trained (yet) a guide would help him, along with a lot of users of this forum.
so i guess i will have to put something together myself, i will put it in this barracuda forum when done, but i wonder just how many ver2 barra kits are out there unbuilt?, dont get me wrong i understand its probably better for you to buy the new kit, but a fixes list for muggles with the old kit may be of help.
the info is all there and not hard to find and understand (for us), but "others" tend to search not find a simple guide and give up leaving the kit unbuilt.
when i have put all the info together i will post it,
              aly.

When you do get the first ones working could you let me know please maybe send me a PC message. I also have a both versions, the Geotech works fine, unlike the first one, its sad to see it in a box not being put to good use.
