  • Jumper question?

I'm building opt. 1 of the latest ver. of the HH. It says to add necessary jumpers but doesn't specify number or placement. I have added the jumpers in the circles 1,2, and 3. I added the ones in circle 1 after picture was taken. Are there any others that I missed? Are there any components that I missed installing for opt. 1?

Question 2. I inadvertantly reversed the battery leads. I heard a pop and saw a puff of smoke from the area of the 7660 chip. How many components did I fry and which ones? Is it an easy fix or should I just strip the board and start over?

    Thanks in Advance.
I am a novice in electronics but trying to learn..............

    WesP,

The jumpers are for VCO or Non VCO, Active or Passive Pulldown, and Mono or Dual Coil. You should be able to figure out which jumper go where from the schematic (and older schematics, Rev. C etc) after studying them.

This isn't an easy project, read the artical several times, read ALL the posts in this forum.(This may also help you with your jumper problems)

Also although this project can be done with a DMM (and some luck) you really need a scope to troubleshoot and verifiy output waveshapes.

The "pop" was most likely a capacitor blowing up, check the electrolytic caps near the 7660 for damage. (Look underneth where the leads enter the cap)
Replace, and test voltages and outputs as per the artical.

Also some components are critical, not all types and manufactures will work as well as others.

There's a book "Getting started in electronics" by Forrest C. Mimms, very good for the electronics novice.

    Hope this helps,

    Molzar

You might have blown the 7660 also. I have done the same thing once in the past. Now I have a high current diode in series with the power going to the board so I dont do that any more. If I accidently hook up power in reverse nothing happens. If you hook up the diode incorrectly the circuit will not work so make sure you have power hooked up properly and the circuit works then disconnect the pos lead and insert the diode. If the diode is in backwards then the circuit will not operate. reverse the diode not the power leads and test again. It does decrease the input voltage by about .7volts.

        Ray,
Thanks for the reply. I've checked the 7660 and it's OK.(I swapped it with the one in my Cemlec PI-1 and it works fine in it. I think I will add the diode as you sugested to avoid any future problems. I think my problem now is just getting everything adjusted properly.

          Molzar,
Thanks for the help. I have reread most of the messages and looked over the schematics and figured out a couple of the jumpers so far. I think it's just a matter of the right jumpers and adjustments. I'm getting some of the correct patterns on my O-scope. I just need to learn abit more about the proper settings to read them on the scope. I have two scopes. One is an old analog crt scope I picked up on the internet for $50. It seems to work correctly so far. The other is a digital one that plugs into the USB port on a computer. It doesn't have the range of the old scope but it is easier to read the pattern and it has digital readouts of voltages, freq. ect.
