Hammerhead R18?

On the schematic for the Hammerhead I there is a variable resistor R18 working in association with IC6. It looks like it has something to do with balancing the voltage inputs to IC6. I haven't seen any mention of it in the article that describes this circuit, was wondering what it's purpose is and what should I be looking for in the way of results, voltages, or waveforms when I go fooling with it?

If you look at the manual .. it explains in detail how to set it up .. you should only require a multimeter for this as you are checking voltages...
