As the title says, is LM7905CT a suitable replacement for the 7905L -5V regulator? Apart from the slightly larger pin size and current rating it seems to be equivalent however I want to be sure before I blow something up :P

The main differences are:
LM7905 => 1A rating (in your data sheet, but some will go to 1.5A), TO-220 package
LM79L05 => 100mA rating, TO-226 package

The other main difference is consumption, but the benefit of using the to-220 case. (1Amp) is that you will have a much smaller drop-out voltage.
You can also blame Farnell, who have the Fairchild version listed as TO-226A.
