I assembled a minipulse plus which I purchased from silverdog but didn't spot the error in the instructions which shows the battery connection to be reverse polarity so unfortunately when powered up the 1000uf electrolytic capacitor popped. After looking at a different picture in the instructions I realized that the last picture showing external parts connected was wrong. Can anyone offer advice regarding the likelihood that all the chips etc will be damaged. Unfortunately my electronic expertise is limited and do the instructions have other mistakes.

The latest one is here -> Minipulse Plus REV-D
Also, if you read (and followed) the part where it says:
-------------------------------------------------------------
If you go through the following steps carefully, and in order, you will have a greater chance of ending up with a detector that actually works. Please do not proceed to the next step until you have solved any problems encountered in the current step. If you get stuck at any stage during the build, then seek help in the Geotech forums before moving on. Do not simply populate the whole board; discover it doesn't work (which will be the most likely result) and then post in the forums: “I've built the Minipulse Plus, and it's not working. What's wrong?” …. as you will receive little sympathy from other Geotech members.
-------------------------------------------------------------
then you should only have the power supplies fitted to the board. In which case the damage will be limited.
If you did not follow the instructions above, and fitted all the components before switching on, then I suspect you've probably blown U1 and U2 as well.

they use 1 % resistors not for some especial target, they simply does not want to have problems in mass production.
another way they want to get 'stable PCB's batch with not needed to waste time on their problems fixing'.
as for you you can use any % resistors just cause you do for yourself and 1 pcs and able to fix a problem if you see.
