  • Tesoro Royal Sabre suggestions

In 1985 I bought a new Tesoro Royal Sabre - used it once and packed it away & forgot about it completely.

Stumbled across it in my attic a few weeks ago. Opened it up, and fortunately I'd had the good sense to remove the batteries before forgetting about it.

I put in new batteries and took it to my yard & turned it on. It came right to life.....

However, it's like it's sitting on a signal period. Can't use it! Full blast, with no change when coil is placed over a target.

Lifetime warranty? I e-mailed Tesoro 3 weeks ago describing the problem, asked for hints, and asked if it was covered under the warranty. No response in 3 weeks.......

I have other detectors, but since I paid a goodly amount for this baby 28 years ago, I'd still like to use it again.

Does anyone here have any advise, hints, fixes etc? All input would be delightfully received!

    Thank you,

    Roger

    Roger,

welcome in new forum for you.
you may look into GMT King Cobra thread. Tesoro Royal Sabre is same schematic like as King Cobra. Can you share pics of TRS's board?

Thanks for the response - it certainly opens up new directions to search.

I work 90 minutes from my home, stay near the job during the week. Tuesday's weather forecast for yesterday - Thursday - was for sunny and 50 degrees. What we actually got was 6" of snow instead!

When I get home, I'll fetch the TRS back. With no response from Tesoro, it likely won't do any harm for me to pull the board out and take pics.

In the meantime I do have my faithful Fisher 1260X and a 3 week old E-Trac to play with!

But it's certainly a shame to have that TRS wasting away. The one time I used it for less than an hour, I did find a Merc!

If I were you I would try to raise Tesoro's service department on the telephone before I would ever attempt to repair that unit.

It probably is an easy fix for somebody with experience (and proper test equipment), but you would be shooting in the dark and I have watched as others "bit the dust" in attempting "easy" jobs on their detectors. Don't void your warranty unless you are intending to modify your machine.

Next week we are projected to have SPRING! Finally! Maybe.......

Thank both of you for your responses. This week, I will contact Tesoro by phone. But I will also be prepared to make any fixes myself. I'm not an electronics kinda fellow, not today. But I have taken electronics classes with board level repairs - but it has been a very long time ago when board level repairs were necessary. My eyes are fading = cataracts & glaucoma, and my hands shake a bit from some sort of syndrome I'm not supposed to worry about, but I retro'd back to a single edge razor and have yet to cut myself - though at times I need to hold my left hand to steady it.

I still have the tools from the electronics classes - I gradjated (lol) from the NRI Schools Microcomputer & Microprocessor Repair course off a matchbook ad (a lofty educational institiute) over 20 years ago and quickly forgot it.

But, I have no fear! I have nothing to lose.

Yet, in real life I'm pretty mechanical.

            Electricity is magic

I'll see how Tesoro talks to me. That should be interesting at the least! I'll post their response. And kt315, I definitely believe you. Porkluvr has a point, but I really expect to get the runaround from Tesoro support = lifetime warranty my derriere!

I did look into the King Cobra thread and found the Tesoro Golden Sabre schematic. I guess I should have expected it, but I was surprised by that. Money is money, and technology is transferable! Profit for everyone. Probable the PCB was generic for many. Obviously kt315 you've seen that along the way.

Correction! The King Cobra thread has the Tesoro ROYAL Sabre schematic.... NOT the Golden Sabre....

that is strange for me people do not wish to give the information. they go here again and again and only ask. but what they will get on if THEY DO NOT WISH TO GIVE THEMSELF?? what another members will answer if there is not reply info they went in the forum for?? I can sing, dance for you, drink for your health and also to suggest to call Tesoro repair department because it is Tesoro with lifetime warranty. then you do not need in the forum. you waste a time.

Oh yeah! That baby did cost me over $500 delivered. I knew I'd paid a bunch for it. But I'd forgotten how much....

I really do not expect anything from Tesoro. And I gave up on them after the non-response.

I've zero to lose by trying to repair it myself, and actually I'd feel better doing the fix.

I do appreciate your time and input! You have given me the better input, and you've been right on. No offense to porkluvr, as we try to maintain a politeness of being.

what is your opinion on the blanking circuit? is it working? how working? the feature is in King Cobra, but not released, does not used.

                      Roger,

Tesoro service is generally quite good, and they really do honor their lifetime warranty. Call them, they will take care of the problem. I suspect it's the coil gone bad after sitting in a hot attic for 28 years. You could check for this if someone else has a compatible coil.

I don't really remember why I bought the Royal Sabre. I look at it now and wonder what the heck. I was in Ohio then and was running into a heck of a lot of trash, had the Garret Deepseeker ADS, and the Fisher 1260X, ran both of them, each to their own capabilities, but ran into so much darned trash - both the Garrett and the Fisher had trouble at the time with local parks. So I bought the Royal so that I could kinda select just where I was searching.

And then I was offered double the money to work in Boston and there I went. Tesoro in a box and on to the attic = more overtime than I could handle and love it = money!!!! I'm a construction engineer and have traveled all over the country, lived in 29 states, and been through 44 - project to project whichever paid best.

Got to be too much, marriage failed, tumbled world, and quit detecting - thus I forgot about the Tesoro. Even forgot about the Garrett and Fisher. Went into the attic looking for the ADS, don't know what the heck I did with that, but found the forgotten Tesoro.

And here we are today. You know, I'd trust the ADS if I had it, and absolutely the Fisher before I trusted anything else today, but that is the era I'm from - the signal period, the sound, and not some stupid ID indicator or depth indicator. Bought an Ace 250, tried it once - the 1260X was better and deeper. The 250 was inaccurate on all counts! Gave that to my brother.

Bought an E-Trac = That's my kinda game, so may functions and options and adustments - and the sound is really what counts versus the commercial kinda crap they sell to the regular folk.

I guess I'm spoiled by the signal itself.

The Royal was purchased for the purpose of the time - get that notch beneath the trash.

I must have been really impressed at the time - however = it had that "fit" between the layers of my ADS and 1260X....

And then I dropped out of the hobby. The EX got everything I'd found - and it was a bunch. One time - 22 straight digs were silver dimes, for example. Those were the days when sites really were not searched.
