  • TGSL Power Supply

    Hello Folks !

On my way to my own metal detector, i found this forum. After some reading in this forum i saw the TGSL and its specs. It sounds very interesting and so i want to build my own TGSL

I never build a metal detector before, but i have build several other electronic things. I am studying mechatronics and so i knew about OPAMPs, transistors, resistors, inductivities, capacivities, etc..

My plan is to buy the TGSL EDU Kit from silverdog.co.uk and setting up my own DD Coil (with the great tutorial in the sticky thread).

But i couldnt find information about the power supply. What kind of power supply do i need?
I just saw the two pins on the TGSL EDU layout who says -12V and +12V. Do i have to generate these voltages to get the board doing its job?

    Thank you,
    birdlfoo

You might want to get a copy of Inside the METAL DETECTOR - Published September 2012 before starting any of these projects.

The Book sounds very interesting, but i am a poor student so my favorite way of getting things work is trial and error. ;-)

Currently i am setting up my BOM and just want to know if i need some special power supply board.

you may go to your university library administrator and ask her to order the book. then you and another students will have unlimited access to it.

Is this the holy detector bible or do you just want to earn some pennies cause you didnt found any worth yet?

I know about the physics, please answer my question.

          Thanks alot!

Once upon a time I was also a poor student, so I understand your position. Look upon it as an investment. You could easily spend more money in components (not to mention using up precious study time) by proceeding with the "trial and error" method. Trust me, there is a lot more to metal detector design than appears at first sight.

As KT315 said, you could ask your university library (or even the local county library) to get a copy. It's also available from Amazon -> http://www.amazon.co.uk/Inside-Metal...metal+detector
Read the reviews at the bottom of the page.

By the way, we wrote it for the glory, not for the money.

The board is slightly mislabeled. Apply +12v to +12v labeled point and Gnd to -12V labeled point. The board should draw 60 ma or so..
