  • How do I null a concentric coil with an Oscilloscope?I've never used one, grateful for any help.

Hi to everyone on Geotech. I've been a registered member on Geotech now for a couple of years and I have thoroughly enjoyed reading all the posts and threads. I have learnt a great deal from all the knowledge contained on this forum and I'm amazed by the skills and experiences of everyone on here. This is my first post. I have been making detectors only for around 10-11 months and have 6 working designs to date. I would not have been able to build these without the expertees of the people on this forum and I'm extremely happy to be a member on Geotech. I do wish to acknowledge Andy (Silverdog) though in the biggest way,,,He helped in every way to move forward in this exciting hobby. I felt like such a pest constantly emailing him with my questions and problems but like the gentleman he is he never once ignored my plights for help. So I'd like to thank Andy once again for your help and kindness.
I have got to the stage now that I really need to learn 'How to use an Oscilloscope' to broaden my learning curve.
I have just finished building a 7.5" Concentric coil as written by DF Bowers for my latest TGSL Project. The frequencies are right for the TX and RX but I am at a loss as where to place the leads of the oscilloscope and what settings to program the software. The oscilloscope I have at the moment is a PC usb Hantek 6022be.
I really would be grateful for any help on how to perform this procedure and would truly be thankful.

DO NOT Just monitor the Rx Coil unconnected. Your Hantek will Get MOST UpSet. And DIE. Your input is limited to 5vdc. You could do it with a High Voltage Probe. 1000V ! I move to the output of first Op Amp. Use the 10X probe the scope came with. Tweak the Bucking Coil until your at the best possible Null. Best to have any output on the Positive side. Not Negative going.

I have the Hantek 6022BL. Sure are good for what they are made to do. Not a Tektronix but dang good.

Hi Homefire. Thanks for the prompt reply. Could you direct me in where I put the probes please? Do I attach the probes to the coil leads or the TGSL pcb? I'm not too bad now at the electronic side of things,,,though I'm still learning,,,but I'm really at a loss at where to place the probes exactly,,and what to set the the Hantek to display. All the coils I made in the past were done without a scope,,,,The coils I did before were monocoils for the Surf pi,,mono for the Minipulse,,,a DD for both my IDX's and a DD for the very first detector I ever built which was the Thomas Scarborough induction balance detector from one of the old electronic magazines. They all work pretty good in the field but to further learn more about detectors I really want to learn the scope. It's great of you to reply and offer your help and I'm very grateful. I really don't know where to place the probes or the ground from the probes and though I've collected as much info and videos etc on the Hantek and coil tuning, Im still really lost. I appreciate all you can help me with. Regards. Marty
