    Hello,

I was looking at Tesoro Vaquero, but after finding about this forum would rather build my own MD.

I do have an electronics background so this could be the best route.

I need reasonable depth and sensitivity, mostly dry ground and some wet sands. Which PCB kit should I order?

My targets would be mainly coins and gold/silver.

    Thank you.

Depends on what features you want. For the simplicity, the TGSL Eduardo version from Silverdog is a good place to start. The kits are easy but the challenge will be building your coil. It's much more rewarding building your own! You can probably get away with building a TGSL for just over $100.00 USD.

Just as a comparison, I have a Cibola. It does go a bit deeper than the TGSL in actual ground conditions (maybe an inch..). The Cibola/Vaquero is a bit more powerful and the coil geometry is different than what most of us have been building here though. The strong point of the TGSL is it's excellent discrimination. Depth is very acceptable if the coil is made correctly.

For wet sand, you are better off with a PI machine, like the Baracuda or Surf PI from Silverdog.

        Thanks Don,

I have been considering the TGSL as well for land use.

For wet use, what are the main differences between the Barracuda and Surf?

Some of us have been finding that the Baracuda is a bit more sensitive.
The Surf PI is on a "long board" that allows you to put it into a water tight tube.

I have built both and they are both winners..

I am leaning more towards the Surf because is seems easier to package into a water tight tube from what I have seen. I also like the Baracuda but would need to see how others got theirs fully waterproof.

I was at Silverdog's website and looking at the schematics for the TGSL and see IGSL /TGSL sharing the same parts and schematic.
Were these were two separate projects?

              Different projects

The ones on my shop are IGSL-TGSL version (i.e. IGSL with Tesoro coil)

I don't thin I have added TGSL docs yet, here they are

Is a oscilloscope needed in case I need to do some troubleshooting if the board does not fire up the first time?

If I do need one. How about this one. http://www.geotech1.com/forums/showp...7&postcount=11

Any idea when kits will be available?

Dropped by the shop yesterday to pick one up but alas not yet... only ask so I can decide whether to buy the board and get the components locally...

While I'm at it, does any one know where I can get "Metalized Mylar Tape"... postal charges from the US are almost double the cost of the tape...

                            Mike

PS, Complements to Ivconic & Qiaozhi, the "TGSL - Complete Details" post is excellent... everything you could possibly need...

If you build both the coil and detector then a scope would be a great help if things don't fire straight up. Otherwise you want know if be problem is the coil or detector.

2 channel is useful but not essential.
                              20mhz or faster

Good chance if you are careful it will fire up fine first go.
