  • Have i made a very sensitive coil or do i have a problem?

After setting up and glueing the home built dd coil for the tgsl as described, i was really pleased with the results and found it to be very sensitive on small coin sized objects ie. old english halfpenny at 36cm clear clean signal with discrim at rejecting most iron! but i then discovered that it also picked up my hand waved across the coil up to 12cm's away! i once had a troy x5 and found this done a similar thing when maxed out, so my question is do i go ahead with the full epoxy and seal the coil or will i have problems ground balancing etc with this? cheers andrew....

Hiya, Andrew,... I've just wound/bound/glued my IGSL coils,... not had chance to test them, yet,... you have connected the shield/screening up, have'nt you??? sounds like a screen error,... ( I have just had 2 Mylar space blankets arrive from China,... will be sheilding my coils with it soon.....)

On a plus note, I would my coils as per the TGSL 101 info from Silverdog's website,.. 98 turns, and 107 turns come in at 6.02, and 6.47 millyhenries,... so, if they screen ok, I will be trying to balance/null them out soon,

    Cheers, Good luck, Fred

I have just ordered two blankets from china as well
at $1.90 I could not resist, might even use them for a coil
if they are the right material.

            Aluminized Mylar .

Yes it's been used and works.

Problem is the Mechanical Connection required.

Yep, I bought 2 of these from Hong Kong, they are very conductive, and dont seem to suffer from cracking/breaking the silver,...... They did take 6 weeks to arrive, though!!!!

Ok, I take the above back,...... I have found that the above sheets DO crack, and cause open circuits on the shield,.... so back to the drawing board/Aluminium foil!!!!!!

                    Cheers, Fred

You might try looking at USB3.0 (maybe also USB2.0/firewire) cables and using their mylar insulation. Just strip off the plastic cover and each data pair is wrapped with aluminized mylar. Unwrap it from the pairs and use it on your coil.
