  • Has the stuart 2 pcb any bug???

i have a problem, mi detector only stops the sound when a metal is near the coil. Can anyone tell me wich is the problem?

    the bc183 are correct?

    please help me, thank you

this problem has a solution, adjust vr2, and dont use two layer windings

The board you receive from Magenta does have a few changes on it.

      Hi Anthony,
Yes, I have built the Mark Stuart designed detector. However, I ordered the kit from Magnenta and not from the plans on this site. There are a few difference between the two. The kit does provide all the parts including a flimsy shaft and a frisby for a seachcoil housing. Overall, it did make it easier for assembly to have all the electronic parts already together.
You can order the pc board and plans only from Magenta for about $20.00. The board you receive from Magenta does have a few changes on it.
As for final results, it did work resonably well but does not have any great sensitivity. the coil needs to be faraday shielded which is one thing that is not mentioned in the plans.
It picks up medium sized gold but will hardly respond to a small gold nugget such as a 5 to grain size even resting on the coil.
Overall, it is a good learning tool and it has helped me to better understand how PI's work.
      I hope this helps.

the stuart2 is very sensitive, i've connected the r3 to pin 5.

i detect small gold rings at 15 cm, i'll say a manner to kill the ground effect, i'm triying it.

        good bye

using irf740 with a heatsink instead of irf840 will increase a bit the current flowing through the coil

          irf740 of st microelectronics Rdson=0.48ohm Id=10A peak 40
          irf540 same Rdson=0.75ohm Id=8A peak 32

the coil is 190mm dia 27turns (solenoid type)

for canceling the ground effect on a pi, attach a small zinc (or any conductive metal) foil to the sole of each shoe and join them with a fine copper cable to the epoxi of the coil.

that will cancel the ground effect of humid soils in very short output puls times.

          ciao!

the stuart pi detector is very sensitive if it's very well constructed, i said, i detect enough gold rings of less than 5 grains.
