  • Best coil for Surf PI 1.2 from silverdog

    Hello,

I am a newbie to this forum and the hobby. I just ordered 2 Surf PI 1.2 kits from Silverdog's website and have also been doing some research on constructing a proper and effective search coil. All the information available on the search coil that I have read is different.

The spec’s I have come across is anywhere from 230uH @1.37Ω up to 400uH @ 5Ω. And I have seen the ohmic reading as low as 0.8Ω. The wire AWG is not consistent either, anything between 20awg – 34awg is used. Now I know this is a big spectrum.

The wire I have here is 20AWG enamel and was hoping I would be able to use this.

What specifications will work best for beach work? I am in Virginia on the Chesapeake Bay.

    Thank you

    Paul

Im sure the wire you have will be good.

I would not pay too much attention to absolute detail here - it seems to work with a wire coat hanger!

I run mine without a sheild - its a bit vocal but you get your ear in.

I used 0.3mm enamelled - I jusp looped it in my hands - like flex - and encouraged the dia to be the same and hot melted to a shell. I did 18 or 20 turns.

Id say a smaller coils 20cm gives more of a punchy crisp performance.
Where a 27cm feels less precise in use - as you may expect.

Just ham a coil up to get going and enjoy it - its a good little piece of kit
