Probe coil for Baracuda pi?

I ordered one of the kits for the Baracuda Pi from Silverdog. I am wondering if it would work with a small probe coil like a pin pointer. I figure I could use it with a cord and belt mount the control. I mostly plan on using this as a beach detector but thought this might also be a good use when not at the beach. If its possible then what would be the best design for such a coil. I am a beginner so please use small words Thanks

it certainly will work with a small coil

you could wind a 2-4" coil or wind onto a ferrite rod
as long as the coil inductance is similiar to the stated spec it will be fine

remember though you will need to move the coil, the baracuda is a motion detector

Thanks thats great. Are any of the PI kits available no motion detectors? I might try one of them next. Or is there a mod to make the Baracuda no motion?

I've yet to find a proven non-motion design

with a ferrite rod you only need to wiggle it an inch or so each way so its not too bad

I didnt realize the baracuda was motion type, although never built ive got the bits pcb etc to build one apart from the transistors.
The Minipulse3 project is non motion and works well , the draw back is wight and power consumption but yet to try a small pinpoint coil for it.
Will try and let you know results.

Thats quite impressive, and your MD build, Was that built round a core or just wound round a form?

coil is wound on pvc pipe 20mm or 25mm diameter
cable is litz wire the type which lays around here for wiring my potentiometer 0,125 or 0,25mm2
100turns from middle to top and around 50turns back but same direction of winding
core is a round ferrit 8mm dia lenght 70mm
inductivity is higher then normal 20cm coil (normal is something around 300microH)
tube coil has 600+
by pushing and pulling the core i can change inductivity (and so the sens) rapidly
core is moveable
but when you only whant strongest settings you can adjust it with glue

Is that jumble wired or got to be evenly spaced like on most am radios
