  • Tesoro 4 Coil Shootout?

I now have 4 coils for the modded Cibola. The stock 9X8C, 5.57"C, 5.75"DD, and the 10X12DD. I've done some testing in the coin garden and found some interesting facts
Was wondering if a more in depth test video would be of interest? My plan is to expand the coin garden with more elaborate target setups to show masking and coin angle effects and how the different coils react with them. Most of my "ah has'" have been from experimenting in the coin garden. Has anyone tried the silver dollar @ 7" at a 45 degree angle?
I'll say that it's one heck of an assortment of coils to have in the "tool box"!

If you would be interested in an educational video using the fore mentioned items, signify by a and perhaps add some suggestions for testing that you might be curious about?

If you think that this is a dorky idea and it should never have been posted here, signify by a

May I suggest that a table of results would be more useful, rather than a mass of videos?
Although a video may be interesting in selected cases where you're trying to show an particular effect.

Go for it! The Cibola is a fantastic little machine. It's surprising how much depth you can get out of the little 5.57"C. I'm with the table idea as Qiaozhi suggested. Also, it's important to know what kind of ground you are dealing with to be meaningful.

        Alright then!
I'll start out by saying thanks for the quick responses.
I will provide data from my available testing apparatus and measuring devices which should be quite accurate but your results may vary.
        #1 9X8C Weight including cover 425 Grams
        #2 5.75"C " " 338 Grams
        #3 5.75"DD " " 325 Grams
        #4 10X12DD " " 600 Grams

My first test will be to show the relative GB in my soil compared to a ferrite sample.
This will be done with all 4 coils.

Spent about 2 hours today, clearing more nails, staples, clothes pin springs, etc. to expand my coin garden. Started with the 5.75C and finished with the 10X12DD. Decided to keep on swinging on the way to the front porch which I have previously gone over extensively with all 3 other coils, got a hit about 10' from the porch (you have no idea how many times I've been over this area) in the midst of all the rusty roofing nails, I dig up a 1929D wheaty at about 5". That big 10X12DD (boat anchor) is going to be my serious treasure finder, I can just feel it.
Oh yea, and by the way, the 10X12DD was the ONLY coil to see the 45 degree angle silver dollar as a solid target at 7" in my soil. Blew me away...

I've discovered that temperature has a significant effect on where the ground balance occurs, relative to where the knob is positioned. Realizing this, I decided the best way to make an honest test would be to take readings at maximum extremes (30degreesF-100F) as specified by Tesoro.
I'm very curious to find out if temperature will have an effect on depth and disc. The readings will be taken with a Fluke 561.
Was also thinking that the "Fridge to Furnace" test should be a standard on testing detectors and coils.

Tested the 10X12DD @67f ground balanced and then @90f. Was 1/4 turn (10 turn pot) more positive after heating.
Would more detailed testing be desired, or is it enough to say that GB goes significantly more positive when the coil warms up?

Have been stretching myself thin with many projects lately.
I found a decent free program to display data. All the ones that I could find with actual data tables cost money.
I thought that this approach is logical and easy to understand.
              More data coming soon.
If you have any of these coils, and can add to the data, please do! Ranges are great!

Hi Hector this is good stuff.

Be mindul that if the Tx cap is in the coil head then you must measure inductance of the L well below resonance. Some fancy bridges let you pick the frequency used in the measurement. 1kHz is a good choice on HP digital bridges for example.

Don't think there's anything but wire in the Tesoro HOT coils.
I've never had one apart but I'm sure That I remember reading that there are no components in the Tesoro coils.

None of the Tesoro coils I've examined had any capacitors in the head.

Thanks, that explains why the NEL Hunter coil for a Tejon/Vaquero needed a cap in my box to make the Tx work properly with my IDX.

                            Its going really well.
