I've always heard, to test a coil, turn unit on, hold the unit in the air and tap the side of the coil or wire and if it sounds off any it can be a bad coil. Is that correct?
Don't think this is always true. Some coils will give of a sound when touched either caused by your hand which influences the coil field, or by mechanical stress which influences the coil properties.
