  • PCV Conduit Rigit Coil

First post. Be kind! This will be my first attempt at an electronics project and my questions will probably reflect that ignorance. I will be using a kit from Andy at Silverdog.

(ha, ha, and ignore the obvious spelling mistakes: PVC & Rigid).

Was viewing this thread from a couple of years back: http://www.geotech1.com/forums/showt...light=surf+led

I also was thinking about using a similar rigid pvc coil arrangement. See image.

How is the coil inserted into the housing? Can it be cut and threaded through and then rejoined?

    Confused.

Guess should have read further and tried thinking outside the box. Suppose this is part of the solution: http://www.geotech1.com/forums/showt...il+in+pcv+pipe If I construct a smaller diameter linear coil on a flexible core and feed it section by section through the outer rigid pvc tube, that might work????

      Using Flexible Ferrite Rod

Further thoughts. If I used a flexible ferrite rod as the core and as per a previous link, wrapped in opposite directions opposite ends, perhaps that would work?

Depending on how many turns you need, you can fish it through like Apberg did in the other thread. However, there is no good way to add a shield.

Somewhere on here i have posted some photos of a finished PVC coil, based on ApBergs methods. Mine is Oval. I found that having a thin ring of PVC strip inside the tube housing and winding the wire onto that makes it easy to spin round and keeps the wire turns tight and neat. The whole lot can then be spiral wound with Mylar space blanket and the ends of the tubes glued up, making a waterproof search head. Quite a bit of very fiddly work, tiring on the old fingers, but I'va made two of these - one for SurfPI and one for Barracuda, and never had a problem with either.

Thanks Jim. Couldn't the coil be completed outside the PVC tubing and then drawn through?
