  • Open a broken coil

    Hi
Is it possible to open this kind of coil? Without giving too much damage?

    With hot air maybe? Solvent?

try to insert a knife in glue juncture and go by it around.

depends on what the joint is, if its friction(ultrasonic) weld then dremel, if its just a sealant try picking at it and see if it peels off

          Thanks for the advice!!
I panned what to expect in the coil. Until now I've only ever seen pictures of the inside of coils.

Maybe I can repair the coil ... A coil circuit (TX or RX, I don't know) is broken....

have you tried measuring the inductance and resistance of the coil at the connector pins? you might find the dead circuit.

what the coil detector model is for? you do not know Tonyh. there may be a preamp - you can not measure RX inductance, may be a serial resistor in RX winding - you can not say about resistance of the winding, may be parallel capacitances - you do no see them and measure them.

It's a coil from a Whites MXT. I measured the pins with a continuity tester. Only conduct 2 pins. (Pin 4+5)

                  - no preamp
                  - no resonance capacitor(s) in TX
                  - may be serial resistor and parallel capacitor in RX

a data on coils shared out by C. Moreland.

Winding, followed by pins (pos, neg), followed by inductance, and finally DC resistance.

I was thinking he would get no continuity on some/all coils so he would know where problem could be.

Take a carton cutter (stiff razor knife) and carefully cut into the seam. Once you get it started, it is easy to run it around the seam and split it open.

                            Coil is open!

                            Thanks for the hints!
With knife the coil was good to open.

                            I can see a capacitor.
Also, as the screen is made - interesting!

I will try to get at the port. Maybe I can repair that thing again.

Or at least I can use as a test coil. (for Rhaptor project ... or maybe Silver Dogs TGSL kit)
                            Regards
                            Dirk

Yes interesting idea how to make contact with graphite painting on bottom part of coil housing:

As "knife opener" I usually use this cable stripping tool (is not as breakable as "olfa" utility knife):
