  • Minelab BBs coils

    Hi Guys

sorry for this simple question, but I am only just learning.

Had a need to take apart my coil to control box conector on my Minelab Sov xs2a pro.

Both my 8 inch and 10 inch coils are the old BBS type (not the tornado)

well on the 8 inc, there are 5 wires and six pins
on the 10 inc I have 4 wires and six pins

I am SURE this is normal and original but I am just wondering why?????
why does the 8 inc need the extra wire????

    10 inch BBS
    pins

    1 red
    2 black
    3 yellow
    4 white
    5 none
    6 none

    8 inch BBS
    Pins

    1 red
    2 black
    3 green
    4 orange
    5 none
    6 blue

any one explain the reasons why???

    many thanks

Minelab made an external target ID meter for the sovereign. Pin 6 and that wire (blue) carried a voltage from the detector to the meter. For production reasons they used the same cables on coils and meters. Only the blue wire is not connected inside the coil. Pins 1 & 2 are the transmit, pin 3 is receive ground and pin 4 receive. For some reason my return key does not work on geotech?

      am i understanding you correct,
so with my 8 inch coil, even though pin 6 has a blue wire conected to it, at the coil it is simply not used????

and also pin 4 on the 10 inch has white but on the 8 inch its orange, both are still receive wires???

If I understand you correct, that explains my question, and a million thanks to you

Yes the blue wire enters the coil and is cutoff flush. Since these cable assemblies could be used on meters or coils. The manufacture finds it easier to make them universal. In other words it is easier to solder the 5th wire on all the cables than have two inventories of 4 and 5 wire. The color difference is probably an upgrade or a change in cable supplier. If your two coils were made during the same time period. They most likely would have identical cables and colors.

              OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!

              well short story.
My coil wire was lose in the conector end, hence the questions above.

easy fix, cut back wire and re solder.

well two of the pins just snaped!!!!

I checked the others for good measure and and other just snaped.

maybe just old and to much movment ment they were weak.

Been doing a quick google search, and it seems the connector pins may be gold plated, and not so easy to find.

I was hoping to use the coil for this coming monday,

does anyone know were I could buy the pins or a compleat connector????

I live in london UK. I have tried RS conponents but I could not see the ones I need, maplins have some thing simular but I dout it is the same quality (gold plated) as the original minlab ones

any help would sure go a long way

              Thanks

Gold plated pins are not necessary.
Please post a photo of the connector.

Your best bet is to pick one up from Maplin.
