  • Minelab Coil compatibility

    Hi all,

Since Minelab SD aren't supported anymore and that the Minelab's technicians I spoke to over the phone think of themselves or their guru (Bruce Candy) being more clever than Nikola tesla himself; I though I would ask other knowledgeable people about coils compatibility.

The question I had for them was what are the compatible millihenrie and Ohm value to operate on a SD 2100 and SD2200 without damaging the box, since the doco does not have the minimum specs required on these electronics devises and equipment (with is today questionable in terms of compulsory standards etc)..

The answer from a minelab dude, after telling me arrogantly that they do not service those detectors, was "you are asking me a design information which is confidential"....how on earth an electronic equipment spec is revealing a design secret??? Dude all your design are patented and readily and freely available online for who knows where to look...(and if you start reading them Bruce Candy invented **** all! he based his design on 1970's patents and let's face it Minelab have not discovered the various law of physics that governs the magnetic fields etc...so give us a break). With this attitude you are only encouraging China(to anme a few) to reverse-engineer your product (and you white paint makes every one laugh).

When asked about the Tune pot spec, they even got it wrong and told it was a 10 turn 100K, where in fact it is a 15 turn 100K, anyway, minelab wake up to yourselves...

So they do not want to service them, they do not want to tell you what is compatible on your machine if you need to replace a coil (btw coils aren't rocket science, so for those who fork ouit 600$ for a minelab mono, you better look on this forum as they are plenty of clever, smart and helpful people out there helping out), and they are extremeley [edantic and arrogant when it comes down to assisting a client that has bought a minelab product...you can now sit on your loyalty program...

Any how I thought it would be great if someone could post here a simple table with coils compatibility, there are plenty of second hand coils and different brands, but minelab owners manual tell you nothing about compatibility ...(it is a secret technology apparently

My understanding is that the coils that run on SD are at 300 mH (with a couple of % tolerance) and 0.4 Ohm(no more than 1 Ohm)

if anyone could contribute and add on here a compatibility chart that would be greatly appreciated

    All the best to all

About right on specs. The SD series ran a similar Tx/frontend amp. Would try to keep the ohms way below 1 Ohm though.

There are a few Manufacturers apart from ML that produce compatable coils, eg Coiltek.

Someone else may be able to point them out.

OK fabs you are correct the spec's are .4 ohms and around 300uh the commercially available coils that are available run from between 260uh to around 328uh and between .4ohms to around .6ohms depending on what you want the coil to excel at brand names include Minelab,Coiltech, Nuggetfinder, Razorback plus a couple of local and overseas brands that I have not tested but it not rocket science I build all my own coils it is not hard just time consuming if you want the perfect results.

Welcome to the world of Minelab and customer service.

        Regards, Ian.

          Thanks Ian!

I would not mind exchanging a few tips on DIY mono coils

            Hi Fab,

All coils that suit the ML PI detectors will work on the SD's. Your choice's are the commander series(ML) Nugget Finder, Coiltek and the other imported brands that I have never tested out.

As for service, didn't they tell you that I repair all the sd series detectors must have slipped their minds

            Cheers Mick

              Thanks Mick,

Would be good to know where to contact you in case the old SD falls apart

                Hi Fab,

If you ever need, just send me a private message here or any of the other forums I am on. I'm not rushing off in any great hurry! This detector stuff is the best of both worlds, electronics and finding gold! Unfortunately work gets in the way 5 days a week

                Cheers Mick

                      Hi Kt,

just read your post, i spoke to them on the phone 2-3 times, spoke to the tech directly, at first hey seemed ok, but i soon realised they were not going to be helpful by giving wrong info they being extremely arrogant...when you think that most of minelab patent are plagiarism of other patenrs from 1970...

their atitude is going to cost them dearly, they force peope to look for alternatives...

                      all the best
