      Good on you Barry,

some people make a matching plate - and fit onto the dowels. so the windings get contained - using say a 5mm spacer.

Sometimes as you have it - especially with those shiny plastic dowels, the turns will want to ride up. Hopefully not.

Good luck, the IDx is pretty neat too - you can make them go up to low teens kHz too easily. S

Let me know if you get everything to work. Lots of help available here!
One word of caution with your kit. Check every transistor and make SURE you get them in right way around as pinouts can be different when they come from Europe!!!
Also, if you need a shell I can flip you one cheap. If you used the 27cm pattern your coils should just drop right in.

HI DON Thanks for the heads-up on the pin-outs ,I was thinking of guying componants here in OZ depending on the price of the Board versus complete kit ??????
I have a good supplier here in STH AUST & I have a good collection of resistors & caps ,I have checked out the Transistors & IC's & they are all available as well so I will see which is the better rout ..

OK on the shell sounds very good but where are you located ???? As said I live in Australia !!

This my 1st build of a metal detector as my previous other hobby is Electric -Guitar where I have built amps, & effects units for that set-up..
I wanted to start another layed-back hobby Hence this TGSL M/D & coil& or Coils..

I must say this is a Great site with many experts on the M/D's ..

Yes you can get a board from silverdog for IDX.

The discussion Ive had with people who have made both, is that the audio is better on the IDX. They are essentially a whites coinmaster / IDX. With patience in use with a solid coil they are ok and find stuff like most 90's designs.

They cant compare with XP GMP or Exp2, etrac etc - but that isn't what these kits are about. Its a bit of fun, learning and finding some stuff and learning about the history, preserving artefacts etc, binds it all together.

If people have to find small hammered silver or celtic gold you are going to have to raid your piggy bank and splash on something in the £700 - 1200 bracket

If your making the TGSL read the IGSL thread and do the Minelab coil mod from the start.
TGSL is good to begin with but becomes great with the new coil!

HI S/D ,, Thanks for your advice I will look at the IGSL thread ..

Nice o see you back into your TGSL-Quad project most interesting but mostly Above my head HA.Haar [the techy details] ..

This all; will be a great hobby for me as I like to Tinker into electronics ,My theory lets me down ,but Alway learning ,but My old memory at 74 is not too sharp ..

I have registered with Silver-dollar as he has now re-opend his site ,I think I may order boards only as to the pound vs Aud dollars ..
I have a couple good suppliers of componants in Adelaide St Aust [200ks sth of where I live ] mainly for the Chips & transistors ,,..

As you told me earlier I will need plenty winding wire as I feel there will be Many Coils to build after experimentation !!..

                    I appreciate your help,MATE,,,,,,,,,,,,,BARRY..

HI G/nut,,, YES those expensive detectors are out of my low budget ,So these kits sound A-OK to me ..

                      THANK for you input..

HI GOLFNUT,, I today went to Silverdog's site [Now online] He is out of the TGSL-EDU boards ,,So I ordered a IDX to build whilst he gets the TGSL boards back in stock ,Mabe you could point me to a good artical on those kits as well as Coils to suit???

I continue to discover the articals on the site Soooo Many on the VFL's .. but very interesting I am beginning to get the ideas & work-out the Jargon ..
All of my previous electronic projects have been ''audio & Echo-units etc for my Guitar projects ..But I am sure I will get the hang of this MD circuitry ?????....
I have a signal generator,OLD STYLE SCOPE ,But my ability on the Scope is very limited..

                        Thanks for your input Mate,,,,,,,,,,BARRY..

                          Here's the IDX thread; http://www.geotech1.com/forums/showt...&highlight=idx

There's lots of info there. I thought about doing that one next but the schematic is very hard to read. I was
hoping to find it in a different format. It works slightly different from TGSL and that makes it more suitable
for using a VDI on it.

PS Just to clarify I'm Silver Dollar and I have no connection to Silver Dog who sells the kits online. He makes
great kits though I've bought some myself!

HI S/D I realize you are not connected to Silverdog & Thanks for your input & replies ..

I am not really interested in the VDI set-up ,I just want to build a good DIY M/D at a reasonable cost ..

I will build a TGSL once I get a board from S/dog [out of stock at present] ..

I always figured VDI was a gimmick and not accurate but then read where someone built one and
added it to his TGSL and could see targets before the audio went off. Audio has always been a
"less than ideal" area on the TGSL so I figured why not make a VDI and use it for audio?

I'm putting all the mods on the TGSL Quad now and then will investigate what a PIC might be
able to do to improve the audio on it.

The Silverdog boards are high quality but the spacing on the resistors is a bit tight. I didn't like
that I had to leave them tilted a bit above the surface. I ended up removing about half of them
with my mods anyway so no big deal. I'm waiting to see if he ever gets the IGSL boards back or
maybe some fancy PI on the order of QED or the SD2000. It's nice to start with a solid PCB...
