How can you determine if a coil is faulty?

I got my answer today. I sent my machine in for a tune up and the tech said the calibration of both my coils were off by 500, what ever that means. He said it should read 1000, but both read 500. Then he said the machine had to be re-calibrated to meet the coil settings. Anyone care to explain that.

That doesn't make sense... coils are usually calibrated to a particular standard, and detectors are calibrated to work with a broad range of coils. If a coil is out of cal, you fix the coil, you don't change the detector to work with a bad coil.
