  • Can i use a Groundhog coil on a ADS III master hunter?

    hi guys,

i have a Garrett ADS III master Hunter VLF/TR and i bought it back in 1982!
awesome machine and still my main teccie!

now i know it came back then with the 5.5 Khz deepseeker coils..but 2 of m broke, so i have just the 12 incher left!
recently i bought a groundhog (small disc) deepseeker coil but it has no sticker on it with the amount of Khz!
i heard the groundhogs were 15.5 Khz machines n everybody says on the internet that those coils of 15.5 Khz dont work on a 5.5 Khz machine!

now..i got the disc on my ADS III..n it works perfect!!!
got it groundbalanced to the max n it runs a coin at 6 to 7" deep!

is this groundhog maybe NOT a 15.5 Khz coil or is my ADS III NOT a 5.5 Khz machine?

and most of all...can my ADS III break by using a different Khz coil on it...even if it works?

pls help me out here guys..

    tnx,

    GK,

If the coil does not have the 5.5Khz sticker my bet is it's for the 15Khz machine. How many Pins? They came with 4 to start and then 5. by the time they put 5 pins on them they was putting the sticker on the 5.5Khz coils.

I'm more then sure by time the ADS III came out all had been 5.5Khz.

      hi,

      tnx for the quick reply!
heres a pic of the coil..
      it has 4 pins.
all features work n i already groundbalanced the ADS III n the coil.
my only dilema is: can a 15.5 khz coil do damage to a 5.5 khz ADS III detector?

Well the ADS III has a "Forced" oscillator so it will try to put a signal into most any coil I'd imagine.

The RX is a listening only thing so that doesn't matter much either. If it's working it won't harm
        anything.

5 Khz to 15 Khz is a harmonic and you could use the same coil just different tuning caps
(or no tuning as in your forced design).
