  • Tesoro coil: how is critical the wire diameter?

Many guys of this forum are experts and they have built Tesoro coil for TGS, TGSL, Eldo, Lobo, Silver Sabre, etc.

All schematic and informations tell to use 0,25mm or 30AWG (it is the same).

Using a bigger diameter the first problem is the weight, it increase.
Using a smaller diameter the first problem is the total amount of resistance, the ohm, it increase.
    Ok, but what else?
The mH remain the same recalculating the number of turns at the end.
    Therefore work equal or no?

Do you know who sell 0,25mm enamelled copper at good price?

Sorry if I do not speack english perfectly but I think you understand what I want to tell.

For the TX coil the resistance matters, but it is not a big deal for the RX coil. Smaller wire than 30awg becomes very difficult to wind without breaking it, and there is not much advantage in going smaller. I've bought magnet wire off ebay, not sure where you are located so I cannot advise.

      Thank you Carl.

Well I can tell you I have one coil that doesn't work because I used the wrong size wire for the TX.
When making a TX coil for the Minelab oscillator you need low resistance. The 0.25mm wire will not
work you need 0.5mm or better.

If your coil specs give resistance it's better to stay "in the ballpark" IE spec says 9 ohms 7 - 12 ohms is OK.

Generally TX likes a small resistance and RX likes a big resistance.

Yes, many oscillators work well only if the load (TX coil value) is correct.
It is normal using a different load happen that change the operating point therefore, for example, can change frequency or stop the oscillator itself.

However I have bought today a lot of enamelled copper wire of 0,25mm after searching in eBay.
