  • Litz wire help needed.

Hi, I wish to work with Litz wire on my next PI coils. There are different varieties available that I need to clarify the best for coil winding purposes.
Is it better to have something like 100/44 which would be 24AWG equivalent dia. or lower number of strands like 25/38 which is still 24AWG equivalent dia.
I'm guessing a low Q for the higher number strands would be the preferred choice since resistance/1000 ft. is the same?

Recommendations on AWG size is appreciated also. I was figuring on either 24 or 26 AWG. Basically as large as I can go and still fit it into the coil housing.
I have 22AWG stranded here and it is very tight fit when spiral wrap and scotch shielding is added.

This will be bundled winding, not spiral or basket weave so am I wasting my time?

    Thanks,
    Ran

I think you are not wasting your time, just nitpicking. Because we are not in real RF and there is hardly any measurable difference - any combination will work.
Eric Foster uses a simple multistrand wire with tinned strands and thick insulation to reduce inter-winding capacitances, and he is happy with it. His rigs go with insane repetition rate, and with minuscule delays, so if that works for him...
I'm about to go with 2 twisted pairs, only because I have it. And a basket weave, because it reduces inter-winding capacitances so it makes sense.

Well a PI is like an FM radio, just about any piece of wire will work!

Though I had one coil made of the inside of a coax and the solid copper center wire was seen by
the coil so it wouldn't sample very early.

The trick is to make it so the coil doesn't see itself. I have a chart around here that says 175/44 or 175/46
is the better choice for our PI coils. I have one made with 60/46 and it works OK but the resistance is a bit high.

You want small wires so they will not be seen so 44 or 46 is better....

Thanks for the feedback. I am making coil(s) for my TDI.
Most of the forums Litz topics implied that it was the wire to strive for in winding coils.
Some have gone to great lengths to make their own version of Litz wire, so I concluded it had an edge over stranded wire coil for higher end PI detectors.
