I wouldn't expect it to have much depth. More spacing between orthogonal coils results in more depth, up to a point.

I'm thinking of the comparison with a DD coil of equal diameter.

I think that this coil, the same diameter, is easier to build by a hobbyist and also would not reverse or "holes" in the sensitivity.

I'm of the same opinion, but for a completely different purpose. I believe it will be perfect for searching the fissures and surfaces, as every loop is most sensitive at its edge. This arrangement makes it easy to touch surface or fissure and detect small stuff.
