What kind of targets do you seek? What will be your primary targets? Artifacts, Jewelry, coins, small gold nuggets, battlefield relics?
Where do you think you will be detecting? Beach, mountains, mine dumps, parks, old battlefields?
Each of your choices will result in tradeoffs and will set the coil and detector requirements.
If your answer is "all of the above" then you will need several coils and your detector will have to be capable of adjustment for 'very fast sampling'.

If you are hunting for coins and general artifacts, 22"/18" will be too big, you will miss smaller objects - bigger coils may give more coverage and depth but will not detect smaller targets
It is generally considered that for coin hunting a 9" or 10" coil is best
Use the coil calculator http://www.geotech1.com/forums/showt...oil-Calculator
It will show you how many turns you require, make sure you enter radius not diameter

Silverdog's advice is good and there are many on the forum who have experience in detecting artifacts. I have no experience in doing that and cannot provide detailed advice in that area. It does seem that if you seek large artifacts a larger coil would allow you to cover more ground quickly but the large coil forfeits sensitivity to smaller targets. Perhaps others can provide advice on appropriate coil sizes for artifacts.
