  • Few questions about coils

Hey folks I have few question about coils, any input would be appreciated.

    1. Is the coil calculator working correct if I'm going to use stranded copper wire with thick PVC insulation or is it going to be off the correct value
because It's not enamelled single copper wire with thin insulation. Here is the calculation for Delta Pulse I'm building:

    50cm dia coil
    0.8 wire
    16 Turns
    0.425uH
    1.57m circumference
    1.57m x 16 = 25 meters PVC insulated wire needed

    2. What it's best to insulate the coil winding bundle from shield:

    A. Teflon tape (being used by plumbers, can be found in local shops for plumbing parts)

    B. Paper tape (this should be quite lightweight and paper should have pretty good dielectric properties too)

    C. Mix of fiberglass and epoxy resin (maybe just one layer to give strength and help against moving of coil windings because glass is not good dielectric)

    D. PVC tape

    3. Is using PVC insulated wire much worse than Teflon PTFE. Pros of Silver plated Teflon PTFE wire vs copper plated Teflon PTFE?

    Hi,
There will be not significant difference in the calculated values if stranded wire is used. Small deviations in resistance are possible depending on the number of strands. Difference in inductance will be small enough to be neglected too.

For coil insulation from shield a spiral wrap with good dielectric properties can be used (teflon is probably best but polyethylene should work well too). The spiral wrap provides additional space between the coil and the shield and should reduce the coil to shield capacitance.

Teflon has 2-3 times better dielectric properties compared to PVC.

      hello eclipse
if you use wire like the 0,8 litz wire it is necessary that you change your damping resistor
