  • is this coil fixable?

    as the title says.

the coil detects metal etc but if the coil cable is moved about. even slowly the coil picks the cable up as a metal target. if you get what i mean.
this is coil. it is a ( 14 x 10 excelerator Q2 elliptical pro coil ) for the minelab Explorer detector.

    thanks in advance guys.

In my own experience repairing 2-way radios, microphone cords usually become int. near or inside the strain relief. Is the cord shielded? Aluminized mylar inside a braided shield is common for low level signals and is a weak point in most cords of that type. A crack in the shield could cause the symptom even if it is not the main ground conductor for the coil assy. Getting access to that point could be a pain.

Reattach the cable/coil to the detector, tape the cord to the shaft in several places and move each section in a controlled manner to locate the intermittent part(assuming the problem is outside the coil assy. itself.

    Report back.

that all sounds double dutch to me. sounds like a case of putting it in the bin.

If you are seriously considering tossing it, then you have nothing to lose by carefully trying my suggestions. If not, offer it to a minelab owning forum member that is willing to try.

If cable is made of fine braid your coil will not see it.
