  • Carbon Fiber Coil Shield?

    Hi Guys,
I'm new here so please forgive me if I ask any dumb questions.

I'm just building my first detector. Never owned one before, even a commercial one. I'm building the Mini Pulse Plus kit, that is sold by Silverdog, the kit arrived yesterday and is really nice quality.

I know that the MPP doesn't need to have a coil that is shielded to work, but: While reading about coils and shields, I suddenly remembered that I have a roll of woven Carbon Fibre cloth, that I bought for something else.. I was just wondering if it might make a good coil shield on a flat wound coil (the speaker wire type) if I were to put a disc of it above and below the coil, and connect the two discs to the ground connection?? Any of you guys have an opinion on this??

    Best regards,
    Jules.

    Is the cloth conductive.

Yes as far as I know it is.... I'll have to dig it out and shove a meter on it, but there's no reason that it shouldn't be conductive, because it's just pure carbon fibers nothing else.

      Best regards,
      Jules.

It depends how easily the carbon fibre can be detected. I would build the MPP first and get it working with a standard jumble-would coil, and then build the flat wound coil. After that, see how easily the carbon fibre is detected as opposed to aluminium foil. If it seems about the same, you could cut the cloth to fit and run further tests. Just don't permanently fix everything into place until you've decided whether this will work or not.

Thanks for your advice... Yes I agree.. experiment to find out what works best first, before permanently fixing anything. I'm planning to build a few different coils to try out, just to see how they work in different environments. So I'll make sure I'm getting good range and sensitivity before I glue everything up.

            Best regards,
            Jules.
